Re: Critisise the action not the person.

Greetings Sarath, Do not criticise the person but criticise the action. I can't recall where I heard the above phrase but it got some Buddhist tone in it. It is not in accord with the Dhamma. Rather... “Bhikkhus, the fool is characterized by his actions ; the wise person is characterized by his acti...

Re: Critisise the action not the person.

Greetings Sarath, Does this mean there no person other than the action? Whether this is so, it's not what the phrase means. Rather, it usually means that people get triggered when they have to face up to the reality that they are the ones responsible for their actions. "Criticize the action, not the...

many discourses that describe how a student is trained by either the Buddha or another teacher.
Trained in the Dhamma, or trained in technique? It was the latter I was enquiring upon.

Thanks.

Nibbana is causeless
If we take Dependent Origination in reverse order (path to Nibbana) why it is causeless?
"Dependent Origination in reverse order" is nothing but the removal of causes. Re-read the sutta and you will see it is so.

Re: Does Nibbana cool down all temperaments & dissolve greed & enmity?

Greetings DooDoot, Dear forum I read the following opinion on the internet: Nibbana brings peace, its cools down all temperaments, nibbana dissolves greed, enmity, nibbana is mindfullnes, nibbana is the awareness, nibbana is selfless, nibbana is the centre of meditation, nibbana is the one leading u...

Re: Will Goenka and Mahasi traditions change...

Greetings Mike, Sure. You need to make up technique (or, more commonly, read/hear from others) and refine it... Is there any sutta evidence for this approach? I'm not aware of the things you mention having any detailed treatment in the suttas... Often there is a very good reason for that. Once the B...

Re: How the world empty if it is dependently originated?

Greetings Sarath, How the world empty if it is dependently originated? If everything is dependently originated, there should be some thing before. Yes, ignorance. Now, you tell me how anything that is literally dependent upon ignorance for its being , could be anything other than empty? I'll wait. M...

Re: Will Goenka and Mahasi traditions change...

Greetings Pitakele, I agree somewhat, but would add that training in non-fabrication of sankhata-dhamma naturally leads to penetration of the three characteristics, and eventually, to nibbāna (as per opening para of the sutta.) Agreed. That is the proper order, with the horse before the cart. Metta,...

Re: Will Goenka and Mahasi traditions change...

Greetings, I am not sure if you just mean that the terms anattā and anicca are not mentioned, but certainly the sutta is full of methods to cultivate anattāsaññā More fundamentally IMO, it's a training in the non-fabrication of sankhata-dhamma, which helps develop the understanding that how you fram...

Re: Will Goenka and Mahasi traditions change...

Greetings LuisR, Now that we know the Satipatthana Sutta is not authentic? What is the basis for this allegation? :reading: Frankly, the Goenka and Mahasi methods are only tangentially related to the Satipatthana Sutta anyway... for example, where in the Satipatthana Sutta is there any direct refere...

Re: Picking up the threads of Theravada again

Greetings, But the problem remains, Theravada suttas are rare and those that exist are online and often incomplete. I use accesstoinsight a lot but are there other sources of Theravada texts out there? There are very many Theravada Suttas so in that respect they are not rare. All the main collection...
