Re: Mom dejected about my decision to ordain

Greetings, I appreciate everyone's advice up to this point and it's definitely given me some food for thought. But I'd like to bring the discussion back to the issue with my mom, which is the main factor here, regardless of whether I ordain soon or after getting a degree, I intend to try at some poi...

Greetings, In all of these cases, craving prevents us from seeing cessation, and seeing through the wrong view of “The World” as substantial. But what about my alarm clock?... Just kidding! ;) 8-) This is a pleasure to read.... well said Mike. :anjali: :candle: :candle: Metta, Paul. :)

Re: Bhikkhu Anālayo’s e-learning course on the Nibbana sermons by Bhikkhu Katukurunde Ñāṇananda

Greetings, :candle: Nice. Thanks for sharing Mike. The relationship outlined above between C&R, Nibbana Sermons, and Paticcasamuppada, is probably why other people's commentary on these works is of little interest to me. Like the Buddha before him, I think he lived long enough and had ample opportun...

Re: Hello, I need help understanding "desire"

Greetings, The first idea that comes to mind after reading all the answers is that there are wholesome and unwholesome desires. The final goal is to get rid of all of them, but that is a really long process. Lay people are only expected to get to certain point in the path. Perhaps the following on R...

Re: Hello, I need help understanding "desire"

Greetings, I have allowed the above post, even though "desires cannot be removed" does not appear to have much basis in the Canon. There are suttas on the elimination of unwelcome thoughts , as well as countless suttas on seeing things as they really are, in order to give rise to disenchantment. "An...

Re: Accepting pain and avoiding it at the same time

Greetings, Pleasant feeling is preferable to neither-pleasant-nor-unpleasant feeling, which in turn is preferable to unpleasant feeling. It is also advisable for people to take care of their health, and the requisites are provided to bhikkhus on this basis. Consider the Fourfold Reflection of a Monk...

Re: Petition: Protect Dhamma Bhumi meditation centre from air traffic

Greetings Mike, That's sad, isn't it? Coincidentally, the Goenka Centre in New Zealand was recently having difficulties because a shooting club started up nearby! At least with overhead aircraft you could mindfully observe the arising and passing away of sound (not that this is the Goenka practice) ...

Petition: Protect Dhamma Bhumi meditation centre from air traffic

Greetings, A Goenka meditation centre in New South Wales may be inadvertently impacted by helicopter flights... Feel free to sign the petition linked to below. For over 30 years thousands of meditators have enjoyed the tranquility of the Blue Mountains while practicing Vipassana at Dhamma Bhumi. Now...

Please beware of Manopubbangama sock puppet accounts

Greetings, Please note that Manopubbangama has been banned for (amongst other things) a slew of fake "sock puppet" accounts over recent days. We don't normally announce suspensions and bannings, but in the case of a serial "sock puppet" creator, we put the word out so you can be informed of the poss...

Re: What is a strawmam?

Greetings,

If that is what is actually said, then it can be quoted.

If it is not what is said, then it risks being a misrepresentation. That misrepresentation, foisted upon another, is a strawman argument.

Paul. :)

Re: 99.9% of Theravada is primitive, false

Greetings,

Perhaps in the future it would be best to ask people about their views, rather than foist strawmen upon them?
