Re: Has anyone tried to recall the previous life?

Why is it whenever you hear of people recalling past lives it's always a human past life? When you hear of people getting regressional past life therapy it's ALWAYS a human life. Surely they'd be able to remember if they were in a hell realm or a heavenly realm. I'll look forward to the convenient ...

Re: Has anyone tried to recall the previous life?

Previous life was in devanamanarati [habitable planet in Pleione star]; before as Giuseppe Vicenzi Bartolassi [which is, currently, my ancestor]; before as a tree; and before that countless lives that encrypted when living in Pleione... however do remember also living in Japan [as a samurai] and Ho...

Re: Is Vajrayana/Mahayana the work of Mara?

Through ignorance, one may sink into bewilderment On meeting the vast and deep meaning of the Supreme Vehicle, Therefore disparaging the Great Vehicle And becoming the adversary of both self and others. Giving, moral virtue, patience, vigor, Meditative discipline, wisdom and compassion form its sub...

Re: Is Vajrayana/Mahayana the work of Mara?

To me, at the moment, it feels like we are like trees in a bushfire, concentrating on completely putting out just one tree is quite futile - it will catch back on fire, but controlling the fire around it may be more beneficial. A tree with a direct connection to the groundwater source of Dhamma wou...

Re: How did the Buddha reach Awakening?

Teachings given to people with different backgrounds and Buddha using concepts and systems they were already familiar with? So to some people the Buddha has said that " I've used A for Awakening " and to other people the Buddha has said that " I've used not-A for awakening " ? M...

Re: Monks who did not practise jhana?

Maybe Alara Kalama, Uddaka Ramaputta etc were also afraid of states with (bodily) pleasures and didn't have the lower jhanas in the system they taught. Perhaps there is somewhere a more detailed discussion about this possibility? Alexander Wynne wrote a book about this: The Origin of Buddhist Medit...

Re: Monks who did not practise jhana?

You say: "which shows how by gradually dropping off coarser things from perception one can achieve "The Infinitude of Space" and higher states without going through jhanas 1-4, which aren't even mentioned." Are you thinking of some sort of "meditation" or concentration...

Re: Monks who did not practise jhana?

* Then we find this remarkable passage: "I thought: 'I recall once, when my father the Sakyan was working, and I was sitting in the cool shade of a rose-apple tree, then — quite secluded from sensuality, secluded from unskillful mental qualities — I entered & remained in the first jhana: r...

Re: The great thread on Sensual Craving

Note to self: Sensual craving is craving for sensations, having sensations is existence, seeing it like it really is - all is burning - is the end of the taint of sensations, the end of the taint of existence, the end of the taint of ignorance, i.e. the end of suffering.
