Re: metteyya tusita true or false

You should consider reading this article by Venerable Anālayo: Maitreya and the Wheel-turning King. Basically, it says that it may be the case that the historical Buddha never prophesied the coming of the next buddha. I think the article is well worth the read.

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

Greetings Stiphan, ... except that the precursor of the whole Noble Eightfold Path is Right View, not Harmony View. That is not entirely right  . The idea of samma being translated as harmonious pops up here and there as an alternative translation, with some support from the dictionary: htt...

Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed reading your post. It sounds like you've learned alot about your goals in life and I'm sure your monastic experience was very valuable for you even though you decided to pursue other things. Your dream of living on a sailboat sounds awesome!!! I wish you the best of...

Re: Buddhism and Islam in Asia: A Long and Complicated History

Would you call the British Empire the "Christian Empire"? If not, why not? Thanks Kim. Probably not because my impression is the British Empire started as a (Protestant) commercial empire, which then occasionally used Christianity to justify its ends. Is there any significant difference between thi...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

A new, dire "warning to humanity" about the dangers to all of us has been written by 15,000 scientists from around the world. The message updates an original warning sent from the Union of Concerned Scientists that was backed by 1,700 signatures 25 years ago. But the experts say the picture is far,...

If by renouncing a lesser happiness one may realize a greater happiness, let the wise man renounce the lesser, having regard for the greater. - Dhammapada https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/dhp/dhp.21.budd.html I believe this principle, if adopted and made much of, will gradually lead one a...

Re: Eating in the restaurant

Even so, this does not avoid killing; as has been frequently aired on DW in the past, veganism merely pushes the killing further away from the plate. It results in far less killing, it doesn't just remove it from the plate. Sure, ideally buying vegetables grown without biocides and harvested in a w...

Re: Eating in the restaurant

Buying meat is impure because you are supporting the worst, most cruel, environmentally damaging, and just generally unconscionable industry that has ever existed on earth. Eating roadkill, and meat that you had no part in buying, that would otherwise go to waste, is fine though. The roadkill might ...

Re: Looking for Awesome Sutta

That's awfully close to what I was thinking, and I haven't read the sutta in years, so it seems exceedingly probable. So thanks! But I'm still holding out slightly in case there is a similar one but relating to Arahants.

Looking for Awesome Sutta

There is a sutta where someone goes to the Buddha and asks why a bunch of his followers seem to disagree about final knowledge. The questioner goes to one person who says he attained final knowledge by giving up clinging to the elements, and then to another who says he gave up clinging to the sense ...

Re: Internal / External - significance and meaning

What does the actual physical/external world look like without the bias of how your own senses are? If your eyes have more red cones, you see more red, but what does the external world actually look like (think this one through a little)? The bolded part is basically meaningless. Looking implies vi...

Re: Internal / External - significance and meaning

Internal/external refers to the commonsense distinctions between self/other, internal environment/external environment, organism/ecosystem, one's own body-mind and anything outside of that. The elements are the things that when aggravated externally lead to earthquakes, floods, fires, and tornadoes....

Re: relationship between a healthy body and enlightenment

As for strong health, this is essential for development of the jhānas, but not for insight development. What is the explanation for that, particularly in relation to the development of jhānas? Also, what text(s) is that notion found in? I would imagine the reasoning would be along the lines of bodi...

A healthy body is certainly useful: "These are the five factors for exertion. Which five? Orthorexia nervosa seems to be a logical consequence of trying to find satisfactory reasons for eating solely within the worldly, secular domain of reasons for eating and living. Re: A fingersnap of metta

I believe you are thinking of the sutta below. There, it's a whiff of metta (goodwill), the fingersnap is for impermanence: "If one were to develop even just one whiff of a heart of good will, that would be more fruitful than... if one with a confident mind were to undertake the training rules... "I...
