Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

The Buddha ordained untouchables. That's about as far away from exclusive as you can get. I'm not sure but I think that the concept of being untouchable did not arise until long after the buddha. If I am mistaken can you find a reference which shows the buddha ordaining untouchables? chowna...

Re: is birth control the same as getting an abortion

As I understand it, the parajika is applicable to contraception that functions after conception. "From this it follows that a bhikkhu who intentionally causes an abortion—by arranging for the operation, supplying the medicines, or advising a woman to get an abortion and she follows through—incurs a ...

1)It is frustrating that even a prominent monk such as him is not a Sotapanna yet.
Why would another persons practice be frustrating to one's own?

Re: Prediabetes

If I take off my weight (I am porky and have a big waist) will it still proceed to diabetes in 5 - 10 years? Not necessarily. Losing weight is the only other thing besides good diet and exercise. Although, losing weight is implied within "exercise". As far as diet goes, a whole foods plant based di...

Think of it like this. Your neighbors dog is an emanation of Buddha and he's teaching you how to have patience and kindness, even in situations where you're getting crapped on. :D

Would he have asked his students to stop meditating and get all agitated? No.
No, but he did ask them to follow his example of alleviating the suffering of others by teaching them, like he himself taught.

Re: the great vegetarian debate

An interesting read What If You Ate Only One Type of Food? Many thanks - that is informative. I sometimes think about the types of food required if I had to massively simplify my diet. What if I had to choose only, say, ten foodstuffs to eat from here on? It's informative but also contains some ina...

Re: Distinction between cult and religion

"A religion is an old cult. A cult is a new religious movement." Makes sense as Christianity was at one time considered a cult. Of course it depends on how you define cult. Religious scholars can't even agree on what that means. In the sociological classifications of religious movements, a cult is "...

Re: Is stealing always wrong?

I do think it is always wrong, in the sense that stealing of any kind will always qualify as a violation of the precept, but there are degrees of seriousness when it comes to action. Stealing the retirement investments of thousands of people is far worse than stealing a pack of gum from a store. It...

Re: If a non-Dhammic person taught the Dhamma, would you learn from him?

Assume he had a deep and true understanding of Dhamma and then turned a scoundrel. IIRC the Buddha stated that faith in a teacher is what leads you to learn from that teacher. The fact that he is a scoundrel is alone proof that he doesn't have a deep true understanding. Hard to have faith in someon...
