Re: Listening to music generates demerit

Does listening to music generate demerit as much as killing and stealing? Certainly not. It's not that music generates demerit, it's that music is part of the 'five strings of sensuality'. If someone is actively trying to sever the five strings of sensuality', one should not give support to the opp...

Re: lice

But if I know that my action will *unavoidably* cause harm, I cannot say that still acting (with this knowledge in mind), I had no intention of harm to happen -- That is precisely why strict Jains won't walk on grass. Yet, in Buddhism, simply walking on grass is not unethical. Simply being alive wi...

Re: lice

What do I take away from that as a layperson? If I insist on driving a car, I must be aware that I am causing harm and create Bad Kamma for myself; it is my choice. I could take the bus or walk, so there are (always) alternatives. Simply driving a car does not make bad kamma. The problem with that ...

Re: lice

Combing them out, without actually wanting to kill them, and they happen to die because of that, would also be unintentional. I disagree, because having mindfully thought about your ability to use the comb without causing harm, you surely would have realized that human clumsiness makes it an imposs...

Re: lice

that is killing & against the first precept. Then so is driving a car since many insects are killed doing that too. that is unintentional. killing lice because one wants to remove them from one's head is intentional. Combing them out, without actually wanting to kill them, and they happen to die be...

Re: lice

Combing them out of wet hair certainly would "send them on their way", but only if they are subject to post-mortem rebirth. I regularly comb lice out of my children's hair, and those that are not mashed up by the comb would soon die without finding a new host. Unlike animal fleas, they are quite de...

Re: Is there a wrong way to becoming a Buddhist?

There is definitely a wrong way to become Buddhist but none of your reasons qualify for that. :) although I'm not comfortable with regularly leaving my family to sit with a group of strangers that may or may not have the same beliefs and/or understanding that I have/wish to achieve. FWIW, people in ...

"Now, Kalamas, one who is a disciple of the noble ones — his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, undefiled, & pure — acquires four assurances in the here-&-now: "'If there is a world after death, if there is the fruit of actions rightly & wrongly done, then this is the basis by which...

Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

Not a precepts violation. However, just because it's not a precepts violation does not mean it's not bad to do. Cigarettes are obviously bad for health. If "carelessly unhealthy" is all that is needed to qualify as a violation, then thousands of other things would also qualify. For example, McDonald...

Nibbana = no suffering. Once he became the Buddha, he became permanently without suffering. Impossible for him to go back into suffering.

Re: the great vegetarian debate

A "lifestyle" of being tortured on a farm is better than a wild animal?? That's interesting...it's also false. Furthermore, wild animals on the savanna, and what happens with them, is completely and totally irrelevant to how humans abuse and kill animals. The comparison as done above is not appropri...
