Re: Vegetarians and depression

The problem with a vegan diet isn't the nutritional deficiency but all the issues you get from too much plant foods as plant foods have a lot of anti-nutrients. Anti-nutrients lead to malabsorption. - Phytic acid which binds with minerals and causes deficiencies - Tanins - Lectins from legumes - Ox...

Re: Vegetarians and depression

I'm becoming less of a fan of vegan and vegetarian diet. I don't think you get all the proper nutrients on those diets and I think it can lead to deficiencies, which can cause anxiety, depression, etc. I had an iron deficiency from donating blood and I can tell you that it had a significant impact ...

Ie. is the core of the sense desire doctrine aimed at relations between men and women?
No. It's just implicating sexual desire as being the strongest sense desire.

however reverse causation cannot be ruled out. Probably the most important statement of the whole article. :) It's notoriously difficult to show direct causation in studies like this, since there all sorts of uncontrolled variables. Agreed. Which is why news reports of said study entitled "Vegetari...

The question is how do you handle this as a Buddhist.
Don't kill the mosquito. :D

In other words, are things exist? Not applicable. :) "The world in general, Kaccaayana, inclines to two views, to existence or to non-existence. But for him who, with the highest wisdom, sees the uprising of the world as it really is, 'non-existence of the world' does not apply, and for him who, wi...

Re: Does Nibbana cool down all temperaments & dissolve greed & enmity?

Yes. All 5 aggregates are "cooled down" and all 3 poisons are gone. If they weren't, then it would not be nibbana to begin with. Sure. But the question is how does the cooling down of hot defilements occur? Does the Nibbana element itself cool down defilements? I don't think the quote you posted is...

Re: Off topic from: If you think you're going to get anywhere with theory

Reminds me of the story behind Dhammapada 282 :) The Story of Thera Potthila While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse (282) of this book, with reference to Thera Potthila. Potthila was a senior bhikkhu who knew the Pitaka well and was actually teaching the Dhamma to five hu...

Re: There is no sound without ear nor ear without sound?

I don't think that is the case at all. There is nothing here to indicate that "burning" should be taken so literally. The Buddha is well known for using simile, analogy and metaphor to describe things, all of which are not supposed to be taken so literally. One could, of course, ask why, if we take...

Of course you don't see how this quote provides any support for a non-physical interpretation of the sense bases. Do you think I brought it here expecting you to say "Gee thanks chownah. I didn't think there was one but I was wrong and now I know it because you have shown me!!" :jumping: The quote ...

Re: There is no sound without ear nor ear without sound?

From The Fire Sermon: chownah Sorry but I don't see how this quote provides any support for a non-physical interpretation of the sense bases. It's just saying that all the senses and resulting contact are marked by tanha, caught up in tanha. Of course you don't see how this quote provides any suppo...
