Re: Respect for Buddha images and offensive use of symbols

I am relaying on my memory but I believe there is a allegory in Buddhist literature about luring children out of a burning house who refuse to leave. The parent offers them toys, I think, even though there are none and that tricks them out of the house. That would be the Lotus Sutra. Ah, thank you....

Re: Online Yoga

There are plenty of yoga videos in the following website, on individual postures or classes. I quite like it so would recommend (and it's free!) : http://www.doyogawithme.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; However, I would also recommend that you read about the postures -...

Ray Bradbury August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012

This was saddening to me. I have always felt that science fiction was important as it made readers think, sometimes outside their comfort zones. I don't know if the science fiction of today, so driven by hollywood action and adventure has the same philosophical bent that masters of the genre like Br...

Re: A Logical Sacrifice?

[The Blessed One said:] "Equal I am, or better, of less degree": All such idle fancies lead to strife, Who's unmoved by all these three conceits Such vain distinctions leaves unmade.[17] This something I think many tend to forget. It seems we always strive not to think better of ourselves...

Re: A Logical Sacrifice?

I was taught that before one is truly ready to let go of the self ("egoless mind") one's got to develop a healthy functioning and well-adjusted self. It seems that a lot of people have difficulty with the notion that cultivation proceeds in stages. Before worrying about jhanas and anatta,...

Re: A Logical Sacrifice?

Hi Thaibebop, I am neither a husband, nor a father, but what comes to my mind is that you (if I were asked) pack up the family and book it to Thailand...family, being what it is here, would most definitely make your wife happier...no question...and you having a sheepskin would make finding work no ...

Re: A Logical Sacrifice?

Dear Thaibebop, I know this thread is old now, I would just like to add my little bit on top of all the good advice that other people gave here. Please remember that if you can feed your family and teach your kids good moral values, you are in the upper half of the Daddies on this Earth. You might ...

Re: Online Yoga

Well online yoga is getting famous due to economic situations. Many people suffer from shortage of funds. It is a good idea to do yoga at home through online. You can do this by purchasing DVD's or by you-tube web site. When you start it you have to decide a time period like 30 mints or 40 mints da...

Re: Online Yoga

Wow, thank you all for the recommendations. I am eager to get into a full workout. I have just been doing what I can remember from the classes I took, but I feel I might be doing some of those wrong. This is a great start to developing further!

Online Yoga

I have done Yoga a couple times before, in class situations, but right now I am lacking in funds. I thought about getting started again with a dvd, but I am not sure what to select and again price is a concern. I don't want to spend so much money and get a dvd that I can't follow. So, I thought I wo...

Re: The Secret Lives of Losers

Hi Thaibebop I think you'll find that, if your society is anything like Australian society - the current form of social pariah in popular consciousness comes in the form of smokers, alcoholics, the drug-addicted, and the obese. I am sure amongst them you will find they are just like the rest of us ...

Re: The Secret Lives of Losers

The kindest person I know is an authentic hermit who lives alone in the rough wilderness not very far from here. He's very tall and thin with that patrician British air about him. I met the man fifteen years ago, long before he decided to completely abandon human-kind. When I met him he'd recently ...
