Self and no-self are extremes. The teachings teaches the middle-way, avoiding both extremes and goes right through the middle. Answer the question of Not-self then the Self will be answered. Re: the great Nibbana = annihilation, eternal, or something else thread

I'm still not clear on what your position is here. No self is an extreme view to be rejected. Self is an extreme view. Not self is different in a subtle way. Body isn't self, mind isn't self, etc. Surely the middle-way will lead one out of Samsara? If you blow out a fire, has reality itself disappe...

Re: SN 16.12 Tathāgata parammaraṇa sutta. After Death.

I would have preferred a straight answer to the question. The question is also framed wrongly because in that dimension, birth & death doesn't apply. Therefore to ask existence which has death is therefore conditioned. Buddha is beyond this:.....under MN121: ..... Ven. Ananda, coming out of seclusi...

Re: Emptiness: the reality beyond reality

The chair emerged from nothing. So what existed first is nothing - the ultimate truth . If "nothing" becomes something.....then the cycle of Cause and Effect cannot be true! Depending on how one grasp on the word of Emptiness / nothing.....it cannot be NIL. That is why the teaching is via the "midd...

So the nearest thing we can describe as nibbana is death, is it not? Imagination it is.....if it is the case then there is no requirement for the path to exist.....yet, when reached.....it can be noted as: Dhp XI 154:.....O house-builder, you are seen! Re: What does it mean to have no views?

However I think it's far more interesting to ask if Buddha really believed in the doctrines he expounded, in terms of kamma and rebirth, or if he merely viewed them as being useful? Or perhaps you could say that they aren't views when directly known? I'm not sure. Buddha taught based on a believe?....

I want to focus on: Here, a bhikkhu is practicing thus: ‘It might not be, and it might not be mine. It will not be; it will not be mine.' He obtains equanimity. He is not attached to existence; he is not attached to origination. He sees with correct wisdom: ‘There is a higher state that is peaceful...
