Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
aversion=emotion, dispassion=reason I don't think one can develop dispassion by just reasoning. The suttas, commentaries, and modern teachers seem to be in agreement that it is something that has come from experiential knowledge. :anjali: Mike Its experiential in the way that there is dispassion &q...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
Seems like there is a conventional/unconventional dichotomy in the use of the word 'aversion.' The conventional leads to further conditioning/attachment, while the unconventional (aversion to mental fabrications or further conditioning) leads to deconditioning/dispassion/release. Its not that its c...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
I cant explain fully now cause i have to work, but if your caught between infered phenomonology and literal experience i recommend reasearching what Antonio Damasio has termed the "as if body loop" with refrence to the reason there are 5 clinging aggregates and 5 normal aggregates. Freedom...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
i cringe at the idea of instutionalizing these terms, as there is obvioulsy a reason why pali is still a spoken, (hopefully dead) but never the less spoken language. and also i think we should be carefull to keep USE more important than Meaning, as far as the inspiration convayed by an english term ...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
. . . . There is no "deathless state" unless you mean one is no longer reborn then no longer dies and if you mean that one is no longer characterized by the conditioning of greed, hatred, and delusion -- in other words one is nibbana-ized. And there is no point in calling it "deathle...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
I feel asthough there is a tendonsey to take buddhist termonolgy out of the context of a living organism when pali terms act as a foundation for cultural concepts and wording. They are taken as entities, that is to say that a pali term, i feel, is seen as being created by the Buddha with a set amout...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
Thank you guys... From what I understand, without spending much time pondering your kind and most excellent answers, is that one needs faith to progress, and that the theory of annihilationism shows dukha as an unlikely chance (ahah, nice one). However my feeling is that you are not really answerin...

Re: "The Deathless" (amata)
Apart from the excellent moral and ethical values associated with following the Buddha's teachings , would it make sense to follow the Buddha's path if the above was actually true? Apart for excellent moral and ethical values is life worth living? Dose life have to tie up in a neat package called &...

Re: Contemplation of the body
I try to think of it as a festering, disgusting, pile of crap that is worthless for anything but dying and causing pain from slight discomfort to full blown panic. All these thoughts only cause aversion if you identify the body as "you". Dispassion is the aim, is it not? as far as dispassi...

Re: The interpretation of the 8 precepts
My job consists of light construction work, i havent had much trouble keeping the 6th percept. All i want is to offer the view point that it is still a possiblility in this day and age to keep the 8 percepts as a lay person. Are you speaking from experience?
