Re: What is this chanting style?

Vakkali, the documentary was made by David Grubin. His website is here. You can contact him here and ask your question. Maybe he can direct you to someone who knows about the chant.

This may change. See in vitro meat. Welcome to the world of modern science. Interesting question: If you could eat flesh that didn't come from the killing of an animal, would you?

Re: Ideology vs. Religion

An interesting Working Definition of Religion : Any definition that is exclusively functionalist or substantive is probably inadequate. An accurate definition of religion should tell what religion is as well as what religion does. In fact, Livingston's definition seems to encompass both what religio...

Linguistic relativity: The principle of linguistic relativity holds that structure of a language affects the ways in which its respective speakers conceptualize their world, i.e. their world view, or otherwise influences their cognitive processes.

Re: Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Meditation

I actually watched that exact course quite a few years back before I really became interested in Buddhism. I wouldn't recommend it over the mindfulness teachings of any modern and widely respected Buddhist teacher. Thanks. That saves me time from having to look into it further. My general baseline ...

Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Meditation

I'm on a mailing list for The Great Courses, a company that offers lecture series on a variety of academic subjects. You know that mindfulness has reached the mainstream when a company like The Great Courses offers a lecture series called Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Meditation . The c...

Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

Another guy who calls the Buddha "Mr"? Is this a new trend? It's actually a longstanding habit among those Dalit Buddhists who have a limited command of English. In their native tongues they refer to our teacher as Śrī Buddha (Hindi: श्री बुद्ध), which is respectful enough, as śrī in a re...

Within the booklet, Arahattamagga Arahattaphala , a collection of talks by Ajann Maha Boowa, is a talk entitled, Shedding Tears of Amazement with Dhamma . It's worth a read in combination with the following youtube video of Ajaan Maha Boowa that the transcribed talk was taken from: https://www.youtu...

video series: Thanissaro Bhikkhu's Recognizing the Dhamma

Not sure where to put this. If it is better suited somewhere else, please move. Thanissaro Bhikkhu recently gave a daylong workshop at the Portland Friends of the Dharma ( http://www.pdxdhamma.org/ ). The workshop covered his study guide, Recognizing the Dhamma . There are six videos. Here is the fi...

Re: Zen, Zazen and Dogen

It's about shattering my delusions of myself and my skewed view of reality. It's about doing something about it and finding help to do such, practical guides that point the way. I need directions not poems. Here is Dogen's instruction on zazan: " Having adjusted your body in this manner, take ...

Re: Zen, Zazen and Dogen

Hi, I am sure I read a critique of Zen in here somewhere. It wasn't overt or nasty, just a Theravadin view. I struggle when debating with Zennies particularly with the 'just sitting is a manifestation of enlightenment' bit. Anyone care to comment? Sitting doesn't make anyone enlightened. It's the &...

Re: Sourcing quote attributed to Buddha

Where does this quote attributed to the Buddha come from? If the Buddha didn't say that exactly, did he say something close? I don’t know of a saying like this in the Suttas, but it might be intended as a very terse paraphrase of Buddhaghosa’s account of “breaking down the barriers” in chapter IX o...

Sourcing quote attributed to Buddha

On Wikipedia's page on Ahimsa , I came across this: According to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the doctrine of Ahimsa does not state "kill not" but rather "love all". Buddha said " Love all, so that you may not wish to kill any ." Where does this quote attributed to the Buddh...

Re: Alara Kalama on Dhamma Wiki

If this is so, then who or what influenced the Buddha to become a tapasvin and take up such intense ascetic practices? I've heard speculation that perhaps the Buddha came under Jain influence during this phase? According to the Commentaries, he had to undertake the ascetic practices due to his past...
