Re: Why Westerners can't extend loving kindness to themselves?

Having worked with both Westerners and Asians alike for many years, I have observed a great degree of self-hatred and lack of empathy among Westerners generally. However, that is now changing, perhaps due to the flooding of Asian societies by the Western media/social media hence the cultural garbag...

The way I understand Vitakka and Vicara is the mind talking (speech).
The English word "speech" does not mean the mind talking.

Re: What is merit?

Merit is good kamma. Bright kamma with bright results. Thank you. I have concluded that merit is the fruit of wholesome kama, not spiritual currency, and it is personal not transferable Merit is not the fruit. It is the actual wholesome action, as I understand it. Merit is something that you do. Wh...

Do away with admins

What is the role of Admins and is it possible that that are not needed?

Couldn't decisions be made collectively by the moderation team and all moderators have an equal standing.

What are the benefits of having designated admins?

How about a collective admin account, managed by the moderation team?

Re: Tantric Theravada?

There are practices which Buddhists in Thailand take part that are distinct from "Theravada" Buddhism. And in my experience most Thais would see them as such. This would include spirit and ancestor worship, as well as Hindu deity worship. There are also aspects of Thai Theravada and what is accepted...

Could be that it is referring to Thai editions, as the book is a translation. Ven Dhammanando may know.

Re: Contemporary threats to free speech

The immediate context of the post from which quoted Sam Vera are quite different from the words which you quote above. It may be the case that his words "relate back to" that which you say they do. The words you quoted were not in the post to which I responded. Nor were they the idea to which I bel...

Re: How does one observe Anatta ?

Is the conception/sense of self something that arises within the knowing or is it the knowing? Knowing seems to involve an inherent duality, the knower and the known, subject and object, observer and observed. Well in communication there will always be duality. But isn't duality also something that...

Re: How does one observe Anatta ?

Indeed. I still haven't seen any methods here which relate to observing anatta directly . And I still don't see how limited control over the aggregates negates self-view, that sense of me and mine. Do you have a method for observing "self" directly? I would be trying to observe myself with myself, ...
