Twitter boss Jack Dorsey 'resets' with 10 days of silence

The social network he runs is defined by its constant, frenzied babble, but Twitter's chief executive has embraced the total opposite, going on a 10-day silent retreat at the end of 2017. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2018/01/02/twitter-boss-jack-dorsey-resets-10-day-vow-silence/ His tweet...

From Ven. Ayya Suddhama

A woman I know in California bought a large tract of forest land about half a mile from the ocean. On her new property, she discovered a spot on a hill that offered a phenomenal view of the distant waves crashing on the shore, so she cleared some trees and built her house there to enjoy the view. W...

Re: Who or what is being mindful?

Who or what does the "I" and "he" refer to in the Satipatthana Sutta? "Furthermore, when walking, the monk discerns, 'I am walking.' When standing, he discerns, 'I am standing.' When sitting, he discerns, 'I am sitting.' When lying down, he discerns, 'I am lying down.' Or however his body is dispos...

Re: Vinaya Comparison of Monastery Allowances

Hi Bhante I think it is incorrect to say that the Dhammayut Nikaya "Rejects Abhidhamma" and "Believes Buddha Lives in Nibbana". Possibly some monks with Dhammayut ordination do. Is smoking allowed in all "Dhammayut" monesteries? Do all branch monasteries of Wat Pa Pong exclude non Wat Pa Pong Monks ...

Re: Shravasti Dhammika

Seems like Godwin Samararatne's meditation moved him away from Goenka, here's what I found https://www.godwin-home-page.net/ https://www.godwin-home-page.net/Gentle-Way-HK-97/Gentle-Way.htm I did my first retreat with Ven. Dhammika back in the early 1980's. That was at Nilambe http://nilambe.net/ G...

Re: Memorizing Suttas - Methods?

Once upon a time I memorised the Bhikku Patimokha. It takes a fair bit of effort. Listening to others chanting is helpful. You need to establish the rhythm in you mind. Start with small chunks and then extend and extend. In the end it becomes all about remembering the next couple of words. One phras...

Re: The right to cause offense

Greetings Mr.Man, The idea that "one cannot cause offense in others" is not an idea that I believe to be supported by the Buddha's teaching. Really? One need do no more than start to read the Dhammapada... 1. Mind precedes all mental states . Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with ...

Re: The right to cause offense

Are you saying that the results of action is incidental? What is the relationship between your quote and what I have written? I'm saying that though no offence can be taken if none is given, even if offence is given, none need be taken. Okay but this, in my opinion, is not relevant to the point tha...

Re: The right to cause offense

The idea that the results of action is incidental is not consistent with the Buddha's teaching. For example Parajika 3 is dependant on the end result that murder is completed. "In the same way, brahman, that with which you have insulted me, who is not insulting; that with which you have taunted me,...

Re: The right to cause offense

I would say one cannot cause offense in others, as people are usually looking to be offended, thus causing themselves to be offended. If someone says something wrong or foolish, I'm not offended as what they're saying has nothing to do with me, even if they make comments about my person. All I can ...

Let's move on to the topic.
Thang, you seem to object to Bhikkhuni ordination. Why is that? What is the basis to your objection? Is your objection based on Vinaya?

Re: Discouraging and Encouraging Bhikkhuni Ordination

That doesn't comply with Vinaya, as laid down by the Buddha does it? Who created this bureaucracy? What is the basis. And what is the motivation? It is a lay affair, man. Issuing IDs is an affair of the government. The Buddha doesn't impose vinaya pitaka for lay people. So your objection to Bhikkhu...

Re: Discouraging and Encouraging Bhikkhuni Ordination

Is this supported by Vinaya? Isn't it Vinaya that should administer monastic affairs? Out of the topic question. Lay officials cannot issue identity cards for the self proclaimed bhikkhunis who are not recognized by the sangha. That doesn't comply with Vinaya, as laid down by the Buddha does it? Wh...
