Re: The Historical Jesus or the Historical Buddha?

The historical evidence for Jesus is only the Gospels (those that made it into the new testament and a few others). There are no other historical evidence discovered so far apart for the gospels, despite what Christian apologists would like us to believe. Flavius Josephus? Pliny? Tacitus? Apologies...

Re: Making sacrifices for our partners

Isn't it the role of a partner to make the other happy and vice versa? I do not agree with you on society programming men to behave in a way that makes their partner happy, shouldn't they be doing it anyway, out of love for their partner? Don't try and victimise men, we are all responsible for our ...

Re: Making sacrifices for our partners

Hi Anthony, I would suggest you take the red pill and read "No more Mr Nice Guy". From what you are saying, I think you feel obliged to do whatever your wife asks, just because you think (probably unconsciously) that it's your job as a husband to make your wife happy. It's not your fault, ...

Re: Sri Lanka: Bill To Control Monks Divides Buddhists

My 2p take is that the secular law of the land is meant to deal with criminal or otherwise wrong behaviours. There is no need for the state to interfere with religious organisations to enforce their own rules. If a monk/nun transgresses the pattimokkha, this should be dealt by the community (s)he is...

Re: Advice from a Christian friend (video)

Hi Mawkish1983, Your friend is likely to be an evangelical/born-again. If that is the case, he is deep into delusion, just the same as the man in the video. You will find thousands of such "witnessings" on youtube and elsewhere. That's because witnessing is one of the mandates of such Chri...

Sometimes you need to  and other times you need to  . But people usually don't like you to :soap: That's a nice and graphic way to put it! I fully agree with it. For a discussion to be useful, both participants must be ready to listen a lot. Very few people would be happy when someone...

Re: Samatha Trust

Hi Upasaka Sumana, Just my share of experience with them. I went twice to their weekend retreat. I found they have a pretty complicated system for focusing the mind. The emphasis appeared to be completely on samatha/samadhi, with nothing in terms of vipassana/insight... In the end I decided it was n...

Re: My parents are deathly afraid

Hi Ryan, Abandoning my parents would be really selfish thing to do. The natural course of a child to move away from the parents and build his/her own life. There is nothing selfish in leaving home, I would even argue it is selfish to stay for too long. There are many things people do without thinkin...

Looking for DN, MN, SN & AN ebooks

Dear Dhamma friends! I am looking for ebooks of the first 4 nikayas, specifically the Wisdowm Publications translations from Maurice Walsh and Bhikkhu Bodhi. I am perfectly fine paying for them, that's no problem at all. So far, I have not been able to find anything... The reason is that I would lik...
