Re: Abhidhammic Misconceptions

I don't have much to add in the way of an answer, but I would recommend 'Nāgārjuna in context : Mahāyāna Buddhism and early Indian culture' by Joseph Walser, particularly the chapter 'on the Parasitic Strategies of the Mahāyāna', which, if I remember correctly, looks at the development of Madhyamaka...

Vinaya 3.60

I get the pariyatti daily words in my inbox every day, and usually I just read the English. However I though it might be a good idea to actually start reading the Pali. In today's passage there is one part that I do not understand. Can anyone help me understand this construction: Ye dhammā hetuppabh...

Re: UK leaves EU

this bit was good, addressing the esteemed parlimentarians: "I know that virtually none of you have ever done a proper job in your lives or worked in business or worked in trade or indeed ever created a job. But listen, just listen." Yes, lies and insult, even to his own party members. http://www.t...

Re: UK leaves EU

Utterly devastated by the result. I wonder what the impact on Wales will be? I hope not too bad. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jun/25/view-wales-town-showered-eu-cash-votes-leave-ebbw-vale For an outsider, it Is very strange that the UK would give up its vote on rules that it now must fol...

chanting sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā in SN 56.11

I recently listened to Ajahn Thanissaro's chanting of the Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta , and noticed that in the section giving the definition of the first truth, in between maraṇampi dukkhaṃ and appiyehi sampayogo dukkho they chant sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, also omitting byādhipi du...

The Order of the Good Death

Hope this is the right place to put this topic, this board has changed a lot since I last visited. Anyway, I just wanted to bring to your attention, since I couldn't find any mention of it here, the Order of the Good Death. From the website: The Order of the Good Death is a group of funeral industry...

Unfortunately, that site doesn't seem to have this particular sutta read in Pali. Thanks anyway.

Does anyone have audio of MN 16 Cetokhilasutta?

Does anyone have, or know, any audio recording of the cetokhilasutta (MN 16) in Pali?

Re: What is saṅghakammas ?

Thanks for your answer, Bhante. Thanissaro Bhikku's commentary in the BMC would suggest that this would even cover holding eternalist, annihilationist, fatalist and determinist views. It's interesting because there is the perception that the vinaya does not impose penalties for holding to wrong doct...

Could you explain a little more? Does this refer to Pācittiya 68?

Edit: and have you known this ever to happen in practice?

Re: White Privilege and the Mindfulness Movement

I think alfaaa is referring to http://lhakardiaries.com/2015/10/07/a-tibetan-refugee-visits-an-american-tibetan-buddhist-monastery , there are a few nasty comments made by the author on that page. What might be worth investigating, given that I don't know how many members of this Theravada forum wou...

Re: Origin of Pirit Strings? (Apparently, not the Pali Canon)

I don't see the problem with it, as a wearable symbol of my dedication to Dhamma and the precepts. But if it is done for superstitious reasons then it is silabbata paramasa.

Re: Origin of Pirit Strings? (Apparently, not the Pali Canon)

I don't have anything to add, only to say I was given one by a Burmese trained English bhikkhu, in a ritual where we recited the metta sutta and poured water. There was also a blessing of the three Buddhas (savaka-, pacceka- and sammasam-). The colours are the five colours of the Buddhist flag, and ...
