Re: Are the gods and deities mentioned in Sutta are just the mythology?

Where does it say that Sariputta has not seen gods? To see gods, spirits, yakkhas, etc one must have divine eye ability, this is 1 of 6 abhinnyas. And most arahants had only 1 abhinnya, that is, arahantship itself. They never had divine eye, divine ear, iddhis. They never saw past lives. Sariputta ...

Re: Are the gods and deities mentioned in Sutta are just the mythology?

It is difficult for me to believe the stories of gods coming to see the Buddha lighting the entire Jeta's grove etc. Certain stories are porbably just a mythology, especially those speaking about kamaloka gods. As for this passage, one should remember that ordinary people can't see gods. So gods il...

Re: Who doesn't breath?

But the way I understand it, their bodies are more subtle, than ours, and don't have cells, they are more like hologram, made out of light. Why would they need to breath? Why do you think they are made of light? They are made of matter, though, invisible to human eye. They must eat (divine nectar, ...

Re: Who doesn't breath?

Support by any type of texts or authorities is appreciated. According to vaibhashika (sarvastivadin) texts they (kamaloka gods) even have sex .) And if we take pali - they ride on carts with horses, have trees, parks, animals around, etc, etc, - living like very rich ancient indians .) Why they sho...

Ye, and add also "This is Mine, This is Me, This is What I Am" (which is what Thanissaro actually doing with his "non-self" strategy) 8-)

Re: Ven Thanissaro has misleadingly omitted essential context; invoked a theoretical distinction that has no place in Dh

I keep hearing this meme that he's an eternalist, but I've never seen any proof. Ofc you won't find his statement like "I have eternalist views" or something like that. But reading here and there this is clearly seen. For example, in his explanation of fire simile (where mind extinguishment is comp...

Re: Ven Thanissaro has misleadingly omitted essential context; invoked a theoretical distinction that has no place in Dh

it's clear that Sujato has a vendetta for Thanissaro, based on their disagreement on Bhikkhuni ordination. I doubt this is the case. Thanissaro has eternalist views, so it is understandable why he is criticized by different theravadins, both monastic and lay. For example, while I completely disagre...

Re: If there is no self why defend your self ?

Now that you understand that there is no self but only the five aggregates , yet if being attack by others , still you will defend your self ?
There is difference in understanding. Stream-winnders anatta understanding is one thing. Arahants' understanding is radically different in terms of depth.

Re: "#MeToo!" in Buddhism

Because as per the OP, this topic is about sexual abuse and misconduct perpetrated by certain Buddhist monastics and teachers, and the dubious "relationships" they have with certain lay followers. Well, I know personally one thai "monk" (who posits himself as "an abbot" and "a teacher") who can be ...

Re: Why right view comes first

Those suttas from SN, while dhammic in general, cannot be taken as "something Buddha said about THIS particular thing", because all of them belong to "series of repetitions", and it is impossible to trace original. All these texts (there are hundreds of them) have interchangeable similes, explanatio...

Re: How to confront a love triangle - or should I?

No matter what you do, or how you do it, you're going to create problems for your group if Steve and Elly are an Item. Leave it be unless someone asks you to address it. It isn't your place. You're not having sex with your friends girlfriend, nor are you cheating on your partner with his friend. In...

Re: How Jhanas superior to Nyanas and inferior to Samadhi ? (Culasaropama Sutta)

But additionally in Culasaropama sutta, the Blessed One states that each of the eight jhanas are greater than Nyanadassana. Do you have any idea about how these eight jhanas differs from samadhi which has been mentioned as a non-core ? What is Nyanadassana mentioned here and how it is inferior to J...
