Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

I think that your status is something that you perceive, that you fabricate, that you construe....your perceived status is tightly wound up with your conceit. Yes, it is binded with conceit, but as I said, it doesn't bolster it directly . It may or it may not - in the process. Building public image...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

So why do you think that when peoples share and encourage others to develop wholesome qualities they do it out of conceit. As I've shown, it depends on how this is done. When someone speaks too much about himself and not about the matter in a neutral way - then, with high probability, he does that ...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

when you share suttas and encourage peoples to read suttas, do you do it out of conceit ? If I were to say everywhere something like: "Look everyone, I read suttas, I know suttas, I benefit so much from suttas, I find suttas useful, please do as I do, because if you do, you'll get wonderful experie...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

why is it someone talks about their eagerness to keep strong sīla and their recommendation to do so and they get accused of being boastful Because boastfulness is natural. This is what people do all the time everywhere. However, if you read suttas, you ll see that ariyas (noble persons - and topic ...

Re: Do the suttas ever specify...

I thought I read/heard somewhere recently an interpretation that this was a high formless attainment, but I can't remember where I heard it... If he didn't hear the storm, he was, obviously, in (at the very least) 1st formless attainment - because it is there all 5 senses do not work at all, as sta...

If there is nothing to annihilate, why you are afraid of it?

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

If 5 precepts bring us good results we shouldn't share it too? I'm not sure.
At the price of conceit, you can, though it goes against the character of a noble person 8-)

Re: A question about 'the fire clinging to it's fuel'

So 'Nibbana' had this positive connotation, of 'release', just as an extinguished flame was considered back then, of having been 'freed' (from the burdensome process of burning?) I think I recall the Buddha praising the arahant as 'quenched, cooled', (and thus at peace, just like the extinguished f...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

I think keeping the precepts makes me proud.not in like i'm better than you peasants type of proud. Of course, this kind of conceit, "spiritual conceit", is very delicate and hard to notice .) and just share our peace, tranquility, hapiness and joy born from seclusion ... If your peace, tranquility...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

It's true that peoples think that 8 precepts its for swag and conceit,
One may take precepts for practical reasons, but when one announces to everyone that he did, this itself (in most cases) is a matter of conceit and bolsters one's ego.

Just use unbiased translations like that of Ven. Bodhi. Problem solved.
