2010 Theravada Holidays...Help!

Hello everyone! I am trying to plan ahead for 2010 and mark my Buddhist holidays on my calendar, but I must admit, I am completely confused and frustrated. It isn't bad enough that different holidays are honored in the different schools of Buddhism, but on top of that, dates seem to differ depending...

Asalha Puja for Kids?

Okay, so my wife and I want to celebrate Asalha Puja tomorrow but are not sure how to involve our kids. Anything special we can have them do? Their ages are 5, 3 and 2. It does not matter much for the two little ones, but our 5-year-old is already becoming quite aware of Buddhism in our household an...

Vassa for Lay Theravadans?

How do lay Theravadans typically honor Vassa? I have read that it is purely individual, that what one does, another person may not necessarily do. But I have read suggestions of: no meats, no smoking, no luxuries, increase time spent toward studying the dhamma and meditating. Does anyone have any ot...

Re: How to Start a Theravada Sangha for Lay Practitioners

Peter, Yes, I am referring to a combination study/meditation group. While I enjoy practicing at home immensely, I have also found pleasure in meditating and studying with a local Lam Te Dhyana sangha. I think it helps improve my understanding and practice to spend time in study/meditation group. How...

How to Start a Theravada Sangha for Lay Practitioners

I live in Charlotte NC. We have a bunch of sanghas here -- some are less Buddhist and more general meditation -- but there are certainly quite a few bona-fide Buddhist sanghas in the area. But they are all one variation or another of Mahayana Buddhism and honor the Bodhissatvas. There is a soto zen ...

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

Thanks. I have the Dhammapada. The Pali Canon -- that would be pretty expensive, wouldn't it?

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

My local library system does not carry Bhikkhu Bodhi's IN THE BUDDHA'S WORDS, but it does carry THE CONNECTED DISCOURSES OF THE BUDDHA and THE MIDDLE LENGTH DISCOURSES OF THE BUDDHA. Would you recommend either of those, or should I just buy IN THE BUDDHA'S WORDS? Can anyone recommend a free, downloa...

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

I am so thankful to all of you for these posts. You have really encouraged my further study of Theravada. I have a couple books on Buddhism, but none that go into much depth into Theravada. I have found a couple on Amazon, but I am not sure which is the best book to start with. Any suggestions? I wi...

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

Also, on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theravada#Lay_and_monastic_Life" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; In the "Lay and Monastic Life" section, it kind of sounds discouraging toward those who would think to become a lay practitioner. Thanks also to everyone for the encouragem...

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

Thank you everyone for replying so quickly. This gives me great hope. It is great to know that there is such a great support network for lay Theravadins. This is where I read the things I wrote: http://mb-soft.com/believe/txh/theravad.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (First paragra...

Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

I have been reading about Buddhism for a year and have attended two different Mahayana sanghas to get a better sense of the different practices of Mahayana meditation. However, I keep coming back to Theravada. Something speaks to me about it. However, I am everyday American with a wife, children, jo...
