Re: Sexual intercourse with other woman with the consent of wife

In this particular case, if the husband has sexual intercourse with other woman, does he break the 3rd precept? There are many answers to this question, since not all situations included in the Sutta, how do we know if the husband is breaking the third precept or not? Any thoughts will be great. Te...

Re: middle path and the three views

Every view is only useful within its own scope. For example, pick a mundane discipline like geometry, the statement that "2 parallel lines can never meet" only holds true within its scope, which is Euclidean geometry (plane geometry) but does not apply in curvature geometry. So if we keep this in mi...

Vinnanam Anidassanam - General Theravada Version

Regarding the idea that Vinnanam Anidassanam as being equated to Nibbana, Ven. Thanissaro is not alone in questioning it. Ven. Bodhi's lengthy note in "Middle Length Discourses" says: In the first edition, I retained Ñm’s own translation of these lines, which read: The consciousness that makes no sh...

Re: Rebirth - how does it work?

if you have no desire to come back, then surely you won't? So if the aim is to avoid rebirth, then why do we need spiritual practice like meditation, metta, etc? A simple desire not to come back should suffice? Because to get out of Samsara, one must completely purify oneself in all three gateways:...

Re: Children and parents

AFAIK, in Buddhism, when parents do something bad to their children, the children are encouraged to tolerate their parents. Therefore, from Buddhism point of view, does it mean parents can do whatever they want to their children without reaping the consequences? "tolerate" is probably not the right...

Re: Right Livelihood & sattavaṇijjā - business in humans or in beings?

Similarly for Ven. Bodhi's version as explained in "Noble Eightfold Path" : The Buddha mentions five specific kinds of livelihood which bring harm to others and are therefore to be avoided: dealing in weapons, in living beings (including raising animals for slaughter as well as slave trade and prost...

Re: ariya savako: noble disciple, or disciple of noble ones?

It'd be safe to go with the specific context. Ven. Bodhi's note from "Numerical Discourses": The Nikayas often set up a contrast between the "uninstructed worldling" (assutava puthujjana), the common person of the world who lacks training in the Buddha's teaching, and the instructed noble disciple (...

Re: Race, IQ and Idenity politics: A debate.

So basically you've been using a flawed analogy all along to prove a flawed claim all along. Wonderful. The dog analogy is also a bad analogy for trying to explain why airplanes run on kerosen and cars run on gasoline. Context is what determines weather an analogy is good or bad. Some people need i...

Here's an interesting find, that human races/dog breeds analogy is considered a terribly flawed analogy even by white supremacist posters on stormfront.org! (ref: https://www.stormfront.org/forum/t120656-3/?postcount=26#post941505 ). So if Circle5 posts there, he might got kicked out by the racist ...

Re: Race, IQ and Idenity politics: A debate.

What is even stranger here is how some people could think that certain human race or population have higher IQ than the rest while it's so apparent that the bricks used to build our 21st century human civilization house were shaped and molded by the hands of people of all races.

That's very noble.... in theory. Re: Can we stay neutral

Can we as buddhists be able to stay neutral if America and Russia do start WW3? Somthing is about to happen in our world now. If, Buddha forbid, America and Russia start WWIII, then it's gonna be difficult to kill your enemies, for fairly soon after the first strike, the few remaining survivors are...

Re: Race, IQ and Idenity politics: A debate.

There have been many studies trying to find out how much % of IQ is dependent on genetics and how much is dependent on environment. Best of such studies are those done on twins. This is a difficult thing to measure, but some good studies regarding this have indeed been made. ... Things such as "tig...

that 106 average IQ of east asians is about asians living in Asia But then this leads back to the original inquiry in my previous post: is the high IQ "born" or "made"? Bottomline is it's difficult to separate out nature from nurture. The high score by itself doesn't give any useful info. unless th...

Aboriginal australians did not discover the wheel and some did not know how to make fire. Best city the sub-saharan africans built was the so called "Great Zimbabwe". Re: If _you_ don't believe in rebirth, can _you_ be reborn?

Simple analogy, it's basic knowlege now that one's actually moving even when s/he's not moving a muscle (ie you're moving along with the earth's rotation). But not too long ago, everyone didn't believe that. Now rebirth is a bit different since there's yet concrete scientific evidences, but the logi...
