Re: What really are the five factors of Nama ?

As a side note: isn’t this recipe for “form” an indication of what we have in ”rupa” jhana? (Pushing my own philosophy here :)) I think what rupa jhana means is that one relies on a "form" object for their meditation objects, like some kasinas or the breaths or the body, etc.; as opposed to arupa j...

Re: What really are the five factors of Nama ?

So Vinnana/Citta/Mano does not seem like a part of NamaRupa. Then what is it? It's what conditions Nama. Ven. Bodhi's note in "Connected Discourses": It should be noted that in the Nikāyas, nāmarūpa does not include consciousness (viññāṇa). Consciousness is its condition, and the two are mutually d...

Re: What really are the five factors of Nama ?

Venearable Sariputta says nama is 1. Vedana 2. sanna 3. Cetana 4. Phassa 5. Manasikara How the Buddha defined it: And what, bhikkhus, is name-and-form? Feeling, perception, volition, contact, attention: this is called name. The four great elements and the form derived from the four great elements: ...

Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

To be honest with you I do not think that Stephen Hawking is the smartest guy on earth. He might not for there's another obvious candidate for the "smartest guy on earth" title whose famous equation starts with the same letter as his last name. But there's no dispute that those 2 guys are in a leag...

Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

That's possible, but something Hawking or even Malthus did not take into account, was the changing culture where now those in developed nations are having fewer and fewer children. As under-developed nations become more developed, their birth rates might drop too. Let's hope that you're right. But ...

Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

So it is fine, at least for another 2,454 years. That'd be a very optimistic number according to one of the smartest guys one earth, Stephen Hawking. The Hawk said that we humans only get less than 600 yrs to go before checkmate unless we find a way to mass migrate to a different earth by then. So ...

Re: Why SuttaCentral is so Feminist

I'm surprised that no one has clarified that SuttaCentral.net is one thing and discourse.suttacentral.net is another. The confusion is not without cause and people making bug reports often don't understand the difference. That's true but Sujato's agenda's already crept over into the suttacentral.ne...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

Sujato appears to have not translated the passage. It appears Sujato deliberately skips the item for suttacentral still hasn't replied after I sent an email requesting them to correct the error thru their contact address: suttacentral.net@gmail.com. It's one thing to differ in interpretations regar...

Re: What is Sātheyya?

Satheyya/fraud or treachery is one of the 16 CittasUpakkilesa /Defilements of the mind mentioned in MN 3 . Ven. Bodhi in his online lecture series on the Middle Length Discourses ( https://bodhimonastery.org/an-extended-study-of-the-majjhima-nikaya.html ) explained it as exploiting other's trust and...

Re: Theravada and Sex: Sexual Misconduct

In his translation of DN 31, the Bhikkhu Sujato appears to have not translated the part about parents marrying their children. According to Pa-Auk, what is this bhikkhu's future destination? What is this bhikkhu's future course? Good catch. Let's hope it was just some unintentional error on his sid...

Re: High Blood Pressure

I would like to shift my focus from insight meditation and start focusing on Samatha because I really need to relax and get my BP readings down. Meditation alone simply won't cut it. You'll need to combine it with good diet, sufficient sleep time, and daily exercises (outdoor cardios would be best)...

Re: Is it okey to buy Meat in a foodstore and eat?

Its forbidden to order Meat and eat it so i Wonder this Jīvaka, those who speak thus: ‘They kill living creatures on purpose for the recluse Gotama, and the recluse Gotama knowingly makes use of meat killed on purpose and specially provided for him’, these are not quoting my own words, but are misr...

Re: Any recommended talks / teachings on equanimity?

Any recommendations for talks or writings would be appreciated. Sometimes a short story works just as good as a long lecture: The Zen master Hakuin was praised by his neighbors as one living a pure life. A beautiful girl whose parents owned a food store lived near him. Suddenly, without any warning...
