Re: Why Westerners can't extend loving kindness to themselves?

Westerners are taught to be independent and have a strong out going personality if you have poor social skills w...

Re: What is merit?

isnt it good to make merit for the purpose of going to a safe realm like human or deva or brahma realm so we don't have to be reborn in a woeful plane? This is a question not a declaration.

Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought what makes Mahasi an insight practice or vipassana is that the object ones paying attention to is impermanent. Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

It's mindfulness of motion and the wind element not anapanasati mindfulness of abdominal movements rising and falling therefore it leads directly to seeing impermanence and the other 2 characteristics Dukkha and Anatta. That's why it's not samatha and is vipassana.

Re: How does one observe Anatta ?

Non self is an intuitive insight after you see the first two universal characteristics you get an intuitive sense insight that pops up by itself "this feeling is not mine" arises from inside your conciousness/being. Like a soft wisdom voice whispering to you it says this thought is not mine.

Re: Compassion for Women

I'm not a woman but as a man I see my internal life as being incredible simple. My impression of women is that they have lots of strong feelings and they tend to think a lot. And are not as simple as men. A lot of compassion for there internal world should be held for them. As opposed to strong judg...

Re: Is this a real Buddha quote? How to deal with loneliness?

Bodom, I thought the five remembrances were taught within the context of samvega spiritual urgency. Seeing that one is subject to aging sickness and death and kamma one should be ardent and do much good because death can come anytime. I may be wrong.

Re: Is this a real Buddha quote? How to deal with loneliness?

You could Ordain or find a sitting group and find some kalyanamittas/good people to enjoy each other's company. Buddha said noble friendship is not half the spiritual life it is the entire spiritual life. You practice in relation to others. We need joy like we need water. Be realistic not idealistic...
