Re: Sleep regulation

Cold shower, anyone? Get up! Sit up! What's your need for sleep? And what sleep is there for the afflicted, pierced by the arrow, oppressed? Get up! Sit up! Train firmly for the sake of peace, Don't let the king of death, — seeing you heedless — deceive you, bring you under his sway. https://www.acc...

Re: Are we nouns or verbs?

Fry raises an interesting and somewhat topical idea, but fails to see the contradiction in what he has said. He is not a "thing" (as instantiated by the things which are actors or writers) but goes on to say that he is a person (which is every bit as much of a thing as an actor or a writer is). Thi...

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

I recently heard at a dhamma talk, where Thanissaro Bhikkhu gave advice to someone who was looking for a way to explain to people their refusal to drink. He suggested to say, "my doctor told me not to drink". This is not a lie-- the Buddha is referred to as the great physician diagnosing and treati...

Re: SN 16.13 Saddhammapatirūpaka Sutta. The Counterfeit of the True Dhamma.

The bottom line for any evaluation as to whether something is dhamma or not is based on lessening of defilements and progress on the path. Ajahn Geoff teaches very in depth courses on this very subject--about identifying true dhamma based on the suttas, not his pontifications. Yes, that's the theor...

Re: SN 16.13 Saddhammapatirūpaka Sutta. The Counterfeit of the True Dhamma.

I am assuming here that the "eight attainments" in this context refers to the standard jhanas, rupa - and arupa . As I was reading it, I was assuming 2 x 4 (where 2 = path and fruition, and 4 = stream entry, etc.). But this assumption was not based on any research into the particulars of the discus...

Re: SN 16.13 Saddhammapatirūpaka Sutta. The Counterfeit of the True Dhamma.

I thought that there were alternative lists of "things worthy of respect and deference", but haven't got very far with it on Sutta Central. It seems that the essential difference here is that one form is "lack of mutual respect and deference", and the other is "lack of reverence and deference toward...

Re: Are we nouns or verbs?

Gombrich is my favourite writer on this issue. He talks in terms of processes, and says that a lot of our (modern, Western) confusion over what the Buddha taught stems from the fact that he had no word which exactly corresponds to our word "process", and was therefore inclined or compelled to descr...

Doesn't the current sutta include samadhi?
Yes, sorry, that's what I meant. The current sutta in question includes samadhi, whereas the other lists of things worthy of respect do not. I'm wondering why that is.

That is funny.......but......does it give a fair depiction of how the media has handled the question of trumps sanity?......or does it unfairly depict the media and add fuel to trumps ploy to trust no one but him? I haven't seen any media news on trumps sanity which so...

Re: Trump - One Year

He is either a coarse blunderer who has had literally incredible luck, or a very shrewd and original politician who is tearing up the rule book. I think he is the latter. I think he was the former till General Kelly took over as Chief of Staff and the latter since then. :namaste: I partly agree. Ke...

Re: Trump - One Year

I tend to agree with most of your points. Trump arouses very strong passions among some people, and I can certainly say that he is probably a poor role model for Buddhists in many ways. But he is a game-changer. He is either a coarse blunderer who has had literally incredible luck, or a very shrewd ...

Sleeping till sunrise , adultery, irascibility, malevolence, evil companions, avarice — these six causes ruin a man. Dice, women, liquor, dancing, singing, sleeping by day , sauntering at unseemly hours , evil companions, avarice — these nine causes ruin a man. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipit...

Re: SN 16.13 Saddhammapatirūpaka Sutta. The Counterfeit of the True Dhamma.

Ajahn Thanissaro's notes show why this is not so easy, It is strange Ven Thanissaro saying this. Some people think that his teaching Nibbana as another consciousness seems the counterfeit of the true Dhamma. Yes, I hadn't thought of this, but you are right. Presumably he thinks his version is the t...

Re: SN 16.13 Saddhammapatirūpaka Sutta. The Counterfeit of the True Dhamma.

Many thanks, Mike. This is profound and thought-provoking stuff, so thank you for taking the time and trouble to present it here. I have Sri Lankan friends who often refer to the "counterfeit" point, and I get the impression that this was impressed on them from an early age. Some random thoughts to ...

Re: Diversity among mods

Debating publicly is looked upon as an inferior and unnecessary skill in Asia. :namaste: Things seem to have changed since this guy: Saccaka the Nigaṇṭha-son went to those Licchavis and, on arrival, said to them, "Come out, good Licchavis!
