Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Lal, One of the difficulties that you appear to be experiencing is that you are what might be called a "single issue poster" on an internet forum. Here's your first post on DW: I have been asked by Ven. Sudithadeera (who is a disciple of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero) to join this discussi...

Sam Vara said: I'm not insisting on it at all. I read it via the link you provided, and could find no mention of the sutta being delivered over the course of a night. Now that you have copied and pasted it, I can still find no mention of the sutta being delivered over the course of a night. If I ha...

Sam Vara said: I'm saying that there is no evidence in what you have cited to support your assertion that the sutta was delivered over the course of a night. Since you are insisting on it, I am copying and pasting the whole relevant section. I'm not insisting on it at all. I read it via the link yo...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Sam Vara said: The section of the linked text which refers to SN 56.11 begins: Then the Lord addressed the group of five monks, saying: “These two (dead) ends, monks, should not be followed by one who has gone forth.... ...and it ends: Then the Lord uttered this solemn utterance: “Indeed, Koṇḍañña ...

Re: Effluents and fetters?

They are certainly presented differently. Here are the fetters: “Mendicants, there are ten fetters. What ten? The five lower fetters and the five higher fetters. What are the five lower fetters? Identity view, doubt, misapprehension of precepts and observances, sensual desire, and ill will. These ar...

Re: What is Anicca, Dukkha and Anatta are the five clinging-aggregate?

If you can't see how "my" or "self" implies unchanging, then could you explain the difference between Anatta and Atman? Another way of looking at this is to reflect on whether ownership can be anything other than consistent. Unless the "owner" is there all the time, nothing is really owned. Thanks ...

Re: What is Anicca, Dukkha and Anatta are the five clinging-aggregate?

Sorry, but I still don't see how "my" or "self" implies unchanging - it's about ownership, not consistency. If you can't see how "my" or "self" implies unchanging, then could you explain the difference between Anatta and Atman? Another way of looking at this is to reflect on whether ownership can b...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Since this is an important point, I just need to say the following. If you read the web link I had given, you will see that it does describe the delivery of the Dhammacakkapavattana sutta. Or, one could read the Chapter, "After the Enlightenment" of the book, "The Life of the Buddha" by Bhikkhu Nan...

Re: Grouping by Disciple and Other Ways to Navigate the Buddhist Texts

Traditionally, the Buddha's teachings were transmitted orally. Today, thanks to the preservation efforts of the early Buddhist Councils, and the tireless work of translators, the majority of the teachings are available in modern languages for us to freely read and reflect on. With so much knowledge...

Re: Why are you in this forum?

Again, indeed! If only we all had some indisputable method for differentiating the cesspools from the precious gems, we would be far better off! This is as far as i know the closest thing to an instruction to tell the difference; "There is the case, Bharadvaja, where a monk lives in dependence on a...

Re: Why are you in this forum?

Indeed! One might almost think that the true purpose of the Dhamma is to give the Ariya an argumentative edge on the internet... Purpose of Dhamma is welfare and liberation of the many, it is not about giving people argumentative edge. Indeed! That's why I said "One might almost think..." Some peop...
