Re: Will Westerners ever catch Buddhism ?

... Thang, you quoted David Reynolds as saying that Americans lack respect. I reminded you that he was talking in a particular context; that there are many ways in which Americans show respect; and that they also show a huge variety of other virtues. You then asked me for some examples of Americans...

Re: Will Westerners ever catch Buddhism ?

The late Ajahn Chah said (I'm paraphrasing) that Buddhism has two trees. One tree is Eastern and one tree is Western. The tree of the East is big but the fruits are small. The tree of the west is still in its sapling stage but one day it grows to bear large fruit. Good point. Here is that idea from...

Re: Will Westerners ever catch Buddhism ?

Are you quoting this as part of the claim that Westerners do not or cannot understand Buddhism? We can never say "some human beings do not or cannot understand Buddhism". This was about the general behavior of the majority of Buddhists in the West. (Majority of both Asians and Westerners are either...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

You say censorship i say exclusion. Is there an overlap in meaning, yes but I am not interested in discussing it with you. You dont like what i suggest, that's fine, i don't really care. Just keep doing your thing and leave me the f*** alone. You asked a question, evidently prompted by a comment I ...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

I am not asking to have people censored i am asking to have people be restrained from harassing me. You were asking whether a person could be prevented by the moderators from posting in your threads or commenting on your posts. That's censorship. Anyway you dont have to reply, I think we have estab...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

What is this talk about taking responsibility and a lack of maturity? I have no clue what it is you are referring to. From the ToS: At Dhamma Wheel, we respect your intellectual and spiritual autonomy. As such, the staff here will not enforce reverence to anyone or anything, nor censor speech gratu...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

IRL this is a common practice called a restraining order, this is not something unheard of. If someone harasses me, makes unsubstantiated claims etc, why not force segragation? IRL the solution I suggested (i.e. ignoring them) is called common sense, or being an adult. If you dont want moderate per...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

There have been times where i was asked to stay away from certain members and mutual avoidance has worked well in those cases, No_Mind is an example. Well, if it worked, then try the same tactic if the same problem arises. I would definitely like to have the option to impose segregation between mys...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

So if i don't want certain people to post in my threads or comment on my posts i can express it in the OP and expect it to be enforced? A simpler solution would be to use the "add foe" facility. I've never used it, but I believe it blocks you seeing that person's posts. Check it and see what happen...

Re: Will Westerners ever catch Buddhism ?

Last year when I was in Bali I was asked to give a talk about Respect. I started the talk by pointing out that an American teaching Asians about respect is like a turtle teaching birds about flying. But, we do the best we can, which is really all we can do. With All Due Respect Are you quoting this...

Re: Will Westerners ever catch Buddhism ?

Yes, I know what apologetics is, thanks. I'm asking for specific examples of Buddhist apologetics, to see if they are "alien". The Milindapanha is given as an example, and that is quite accessible to Westerners. So what are the other examples that are less accessible and truly "alien"? What are tho...

Re: Will we ever find a good Theravada Forum

What you did was to take your own unfortunate experience and claim that it was "usual". I'm happy to substitute a different word if it does more justice to that process. What you (and several others) are doing is taking your own standards of sensitivity and assume them to be universal, and then you...

Re: Born female due to sexual misconduct in past lives

Dear forum I have often read the common Buddhist view that "female birth is due past life sexual misconduct" has no basis in the teachings of the Buddha or the Nikayas. However, today I read Thig 15.1, which appears to at least infer being born female is due to sexual misconduct in past lives. In t...

Re: Are posthumous gifts considered acts of generosity, and do they make merit?

If one leaves to, say, Buddhist world organizations a sum of money after one's death, is this still an act of generosity? Would setting up a fund that gives gifts into perpetuity (through investing) keep generating merit that would benefit the giver in his/her future births? :anjali: It's an act of...

Re: Has anyone ordered / seen in person Three Hands Buddha statues?

I especially love the "pondering" Buddhas (is that what that posture is called?) in the top row. There are figures in the same posture at our local monastery, placed on either side of the main buddha-rupa as if listening or attending. For this reason, I've always assumed (and I could be wrong - I n...
