Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

I would humbly suggest that one sane and fruitful approach is derived from Karl Popper's philosophy. We provisionally accept a particular view based on one of the mental activities outlined in MN 95, and then subject that view to the test of practical experience. If experience falsifies it, then th...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

"Dhamma Wheel is an environment for the discussion of Theravada Buddhism." If that is truly the purpose of DW, then it suggests to me that any discussion of news and current events should be primarily about how they might relate to issues of Theravada Buddhism (vs. "here is my general opinion as a ...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

For example - It is okay to post racist/homophobic/anti-anti-Semitic material but is not okay to call someone a racist etc. it isn't ok to call someone racist? I think it is allowed or at least tolerated, is it not? If someone holds a racist view one can call him/her out on it, whats the harm in th...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

It's the general terms of service that allows racist etc. views to be disseminated through a Buddhist forum. It is the Rules for the "News, Current Events & Politics" forum that states "Whilst you may critique ideas, you may not attack or smear members who ascribe to such views". You see a "safe sp...

Ah, I see. Well, that's to do with the general ToS, and presumably wouldn't change if the same content moved elsewhere, would it?

Hopefully this will mean an end to the "safe space" rules that were implemented for that specific forum.
There are some sub-forum rules, but how do you think they relate to a "safe space"?

Re: Should starbucks allow non- customers to use restrooms and seating?

No. 3 for me.

What seems to be most important is sensible compassionate managers who don't just react, and who don't blindly follow orders from "head office".

Skill in creating Latte-foam images of the Dhamma-Wheel would also be good.

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings Sam, I do like that! I wonder if such an approach has any explicit parallel in the suttas? Metta, Paul. :) I tend to see it as an amalgam of the Canki Sutta and those similar to it (i.e. the bit about "safeguarding truth"); the Graduated Teaching; and the standard descriptions of the Dham...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Do we currently have anyone wanting it to exist and not exist, or anyone wanting it to neither exist nor not not exist? I have mixed feelings about it, so yeah. Ah, the Aristotelian (and maybe Abhidhammic ?) question is whether you have more than one feeling about the same thing , at the s...

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

What is the "middle way" between the two extremes of experiencing debilitating skeptical doubt, and ensuring that we don't falsely conclude that "Only this is true; anything else is worthless"? I would humbly suggest that one sane and fruitful approach is derived from Karl Popper's philosophy. We p...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings, sounds like a plan? When we currently have literally... 1/3rd wanting it to exist in some form 1/3rd wanting it to not-exist 1/3rd somewhere in the grey zone ... who knows? Do we currently have anyone wanting it to exist and not exist, or anyone wanting it to neither exist nor not not ex...

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Ven. Sujato's translation goes thusly: First you relied on faith, now you speak of oral tradition. These five things can be seen to turn out in two different ways. What five? Faith, personal preference, oral tradition, reasoned contemplation, and acceptance of a view after consideration. Even though...

Re: Some Questions

Ok thanks all for the information. I've two more questions I was hoping someone might reply to. 1. Is it best to meditate eyes open or closed? I go with eyes open but was wondering. 2. How would you sum up the reason for why we practice meditation? What are the benefits both naturally (relaxation, ...

Re: Lay movements in Buddhism

Vipassana is popular to a small extent in India but that popularity is probably not directly related to Buddhism. It is because Hindu versions of meditation are quite impossible to learn since gurus will not teach it unless someone really commits to it fully. Hence vipassana is acting as an aid to ...

Re: Lay movements in Buddhism

It's difficult to make a generalisation, but my limited experience among Thai and Sri Lankan Buddhists in the West is that they range from complete indifference to mild approval. It's worth noting that the Goenka-style Vipassana retreats do well in India and elsewhere in the East; and that Triratana...

Re: Historic handshake between Koreas

It seems that the US administration decided to further subdue North Korea through sanctions http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44242558 The letter mentions the release of the hostages to give the impression that the US gained something after all, but North Korea had to give something and ended...

Re: What does "sensual desire" mean in the suttas?

Therefore, it seems possible from MN 64 and MN 38 that "sensual desire" is not the inherent primitive instinctual desires for food & physical comfort a little baby has. Instead it could possibly be that "sensual desire" is something experientially conditioned & habituated from experiencing various ...

Re: Seeking scriptural source for "all defilements temporarily suppressed when in jhana"

There is this in the Maha-Saccaka Sutta, where the 4th Jhana (at least) is described as being free from defilements: When the mind was thus concentrated, purified, bright, unblemished, rid of defilement , pliant, malleable, steady, & attained to imperturbability https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipit...
