Re: Thoughts and Suffering

The other sense doors have only neutral feeling. Really? Why then do I get irritated with the yappy dog barking next door? Maybe because the sound triggers your thoughts about dogs, neighbours, and our assumed right to hear only what we want to hear. Sounds can actually hurt, but they need to be ve...

Re: Bangkok's death cafe

We have lots of these "Death Cafes" in the UK, some permanent, some temporary "pop-up". None as far as I know are specifically Buddhist, but Buddhist ideas and insights would probably be welcomed.

Re: Yesterday Trump Called Latinos "Animals"

So do you think The President should be calling gang members (if you don't consider gang members a demographic) animals? I personally have no opinion on the matter. Okay, thanks. You've carelessly missed out a bit of my response. When asked "So do you think The President should be calling gang memb...

Re: Yesterday Trump Called Latinos "Animals"

Well I don't think The President should be calling any demographic animals. Yes, I agree. But a "demographic" is normally taken to mean a particular section of a population, often defined in terms of age, income, consumption patterns, ethnicity, etc. It has been shown beyond doubt that Trump was (r...

Re: Yesterday Trump Called Latinos "Animals"

Intemperate language to be sure, but your post refers to "Latinos". I thought he had just referred to the entire Latin-American world, including those resident in the USA, as "animals". But in the link you provide, it says that he used the term to refer to some illegal immigrants, who were alleged ...

Re: Yesterday Trump Called Latinos "Animals"

When a President calls Latinos “animals” its not just the use of an ugly epithet. It is not merely impolite. It is a call to mistreat the class of people so designated, to fear them and blame them and ultimately to seek to wipe them out. 'These aren't people. These are animals.' https://www.yahoo.c...

Re: Has Trump done anything against PC culture since he won the presidency, or was it just rhetoric ?

For example in UK, a prime minister resigned cause o being caught stealing a couple hundred pounds. Hi Circle5, who was that? I don't know his name, but it was a prime minister in recent years that resigned due to stealing some money for a trip that ended up not taking place. You might be confusing...

Mod , Is there any objections for non buddhist to participate in this forum ?! Disagreement on some issues is quite common . Or is it other than Theravadin , are not allow ? Why not buddhist display more kindness than chasing people away . Tolerances is the keyword . Non-Buddhists are perfectly wel...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

This one is broader than just climate change but is so good that I wanted to share it. The UK government wants to put a price on nature – but that will destroy it George Monbiot The government argues that without a price, the living world is accorded no value, so irrational decisions are made. Re: is birth control the same as getting an abortion

truth isn't a matter of male opinion or female opinion or popular opinion or opinion at all. if you want to interpret what's in the texts or just disagree with the buddha, whatever, but even if all females thought abortion was great and should be free that would not change the truth of the matter. ...

Re: is birth control the same as getting an abortion

Any females, especially female Buddhists, want to express their views? Specifically, on whether or not life begins at conception and abortion is always killing. For instance, does the self-referential consciousness that defines what life is at all begin at conception? Also, are there renowned Buddh...

Re: Labyrinths and Mazes

Does anyone know of any references (Sutta, commentarial, or modern) to labyrinths or mazes within Buddhism? I'm sorry, I can't remember the exact Dhamma talks where he mentions it, but Thanissaro Bhikkhu once mentions something to the effect that when one walks the path, it sometimes seems to be al...

It's not exactly a maze, but certainly a very tortuous route that the parrot has to take to find the "middle mango".
And it's certainly a very fine story! Who knew that the proper way to honour a parrot is to anoint him beneath the wings with oil?!

Many thanks Bhante. :anjali:

Re: Labyrinths and Mazes

You mean buddhist path? No, there is no such simile. Thicket of views is about non-buddhist path, someone with wrong views goes here and there and somewhere else without gaining right understanding and right goal. As for a buddhist path.. well, this one is the closest: https://suttacentral.net/sn22...

Labyrinths and Mazes

Does anyone know of any references (Sutta, commentarial, or modern) to labyrinths or mazes within Buddhism? There are of course mandalas and other images, but I am specifically interested in the idea of a path to be travelled which is convoluted or recursive in some way. I can't recall seeing anythi...

Re: If mind = brain

I used the word reality to mean whatever appears. The word mind does not appear when i am thinking of popcorn for instance. There is some evidence that it is linked to the brain. For example, sometimes when i meditate, i feel my brain firing! but i would not reduce it/equate it with the brain thoug...

Re: If mind = brain

I think it has a meaning that depends on the context of which its being used, but i don't think it corresponds to anything in reality Sure - it has several meanings. What I am trying to get at is what you think "in reality" is here. Do you just mean that there is no physical referent; a thing that ...
