Re: Re:

Its not like these renuncients had no idea who their teacher would be! One must request 3 times to be accepted for training. The three times is just a formality, no need to attach any importance to it. Many Vinaya transactions are done three times. My point is that it is often not easy for someone ...

Re:

Training students to show deep appreciation is probably more of a challenge. As Ven BHk said above, it's easier to pick that up when surrounded by Thai people. I mean, training people to attain nibbāna is a challenge too, but we take it for granted that monks are trying to do that. Training anyone ...

Do you mean they don't teach classes or that they don't follow Vinaya? I'm actually not sure what the OP meant.

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

Do you think cases like this are a result of taking on too much, with not enough support structures? I'm not sure if you are asking about the bit you quoted. If so, it's just a fact of life. If you let people ordain under you who aren't sufficiently dedicated to you specifically, then you are going...

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

Or more crudely put by a comedian: I think a better analogy which is more to the point… If all the students miss the same question on an exam, then it is a problem with the teacher and not the students. If someone agrees to be the teacher of westerners (or anyone for that matter) and take them on a...

Re: Pandaka Interacting with Monks

I do not want to have a discussion about … Just in case you weren't aware, the SuttaCentral discussion forum is much more trans-friendly than here. Not that it's perfect, but it's far better than here. As far as I know, any rules monks have regarding pandakas are parallel to the rules about women. ...

Re: Altering texts for gender neutrality

This seems plausible to me, but not knowing pali very well I am not sure. However, if Buddha refers to a bhikkhu, he uses masculine pronouns, right? When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgata...

Re: Altering texts for gender neutrality

I absolutely do not want to turn this into a political talk, Lol, then DhammaWheel definitely isn't the right place to ask. Please give a citation for the sutta you quote. In some cases the Pali itself is not gendered and it is that English translator that genders it by using the convention of &quo...

Re: Sri Lanka Tourist ETA/Visa Questions

On arrival in Sri Lanka, the customs officer also asked to see the onward flight ticket before stamping me in. The immigration officer also asked about the onward flight ticket when I went to extend my visa for the first time in Colombo. Wow, that's the first I've heard of that. Thanks for sharing....

Re: Help me please

May I just point out, that the feeling that your life / thoughts are affected by someone's power, someone else's mind, is a diagnostic criterion of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and a few connected types of disorders. I also want to point out that putting curses on people is totally norma...

Re: Help me please

Welcome to the forum! What you are referring to as dark magic is something you will find as a part of Buddhist cultures such as that in Sri Lanka. However I doubt that many people here on the forum will be able to give you advice as it's kind of outside the realm of Buddhism. Many people here might ...
