Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

The arahant path and fruition can occur after emerging from the attainment of cessation of perception and feeling, but even among arahants it's a path less traveled. The suttas tell us that in the Buddha's day there were more arahants liberated through discernment than those who were liberated both...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

This is the cessation of everything, including the mind. This is the place where consciousness no longer manifests, where earth, water, fire and air find no footing, where name-and-form are wholly destroyed, (DN 11,85). Emptiness. Cessation. Nibbana, The "jewel" in the heart of the lotus. The cessa...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

pegembara, I've never viewed the complete cessation of perception and feeling as a Jhana. It's just the mind turning off then on again. There's nothing to percieve because perception is not happening. It's like someone turning the power off to a robot then on again. The robot wont know it was turned...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

This sutta is also a pointer to the experience of jhana. "But when a monk is attaining the cessation of perception & feeling, which things cease first: bodily fabrications, verbal fabrications, or mental fabrications?" "When a monk is attaining the cessation of perception & feeling, friend Visakha,...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

ignobleone, If you want the right picture read MN 111 Anaruda(sp?) sutta, One by one as they occured... This is Sariputa(sp?)'s account of the Jhanas. It's a good road map. My advice is to find a teacher that has mastered the jhanas and he/she will tell you what jhana you are experiencing. Thats one...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

ignobleone, I was assuming you don't have direct experience with jhanas because you are saying you are researching. One way is to sit down and meditate to answer your question and do your research. Eventually using one pointed meditation/concentration meditation you will enter a jhana and you will h...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

You push your distractions/hindrances away for concentration meditation/one pointed meditation... of course your not going to hear sound in a jhana. What I don't get is why people practice this and say the Buddha taught it this way when he himself mastered every meditation technique in his time tha...

Re: Robes and Alms bowl

Contact Jeff at Buddha for You in San Diego. He's an experienced practitioner, and has one of the best true Buddhist shops I've seen, and carries robes, bowls, statues, and many items from Asia. I feel confident he can source whatever you may need. http://buddha-for-you.com/" onclick="window.open(t...

Re: Robes and Alms bowl

That's the problem I run into... I can't find any website from asia to order from... not even on amazon... Maybe google just wants to give me search results for my area or for the usa... You said the monastery knows how to source them in asia, they will likely have contacts in Burma who should be a...

Re: Robes and Alms bowl

I think the answer then is to get them sent from asia, 5' 2" is pretty average there and it will be cheaper than sourcing them from ebay i'd think. Thank you Goofaholix, That's the problem I run into... I can't find any website from asia to order from... not even on amazon... Maybe google just want...

Re: Robes and Alms bowl

Does anyone know where a person can buy buddhist robes, burmese prefered, and alms bowl on the internet? I can't seem to find a thread with this in it or any websites... Why do you want them? I mean if you were ordaining or assisting somebody to ordain then the monastery will know how to source the...

Re: Don't like to meditate

It sounds like you have a case of restlessness and aversion. Aversion is a form of atatchment because not wanting to meditate comes up and you try to control and push it away it for what ever reason... Trying to control is atatchment. The truth is you are wanting to meditate and for some reason you ...

Welcome! Although I do not necessarily agree with some things Bhante Vimalaramsi has taught, I never the less consider him to be a very decent man. I'm glad your progress seems to be going so well! Have a nice time here! Dhamma Greetings LonesomeYogurt Thank you for your kind words. May you feel re...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

The Buddha communicated the qualities of Jhana to us like this: “There is the case where an individual, withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, enters & remains in the first jhana: rapture & pleasure born from withdrawal, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. Again, ...

Re: Mother, how will I know when it's real jhana?

"you'll just know" I expect to be the Answer. Personally I beleive access consciousness, since not mentioned by the Buddha, to be the weak beginnings of the first jhanna that later comentators felt the need to distinguish from full jhanna emersion. How do you know when it's jhanna? Taken from the "...
