Re: The Dhamma
If the dhamma is, as I believe, a universal law, an ultimate truth, throughout the whole universe and true in every galaxy. I would also expect many other things to be so. The humanoid shape (two arms, legs, head, eyes, etc.) seems to work well so is probably universal too. If other planets have sen...

Re: The Dhamma
It is said that all things are impermanent and changing, apart from nibbana. However, the ultimate truth, the core teachings of the dhamma, are also always true. They are taught by every Buddha. Although knowledge of them is lost and misunderstood for the vast lengths of time between Buddhas, they r...

Re: How to Burn Karma and Move Stages of the Wheel of Life?
The wheel of life is just a diagram to help us understand the different realms in Samsara....well the main groups actually....since we Theravadans believe there are 31 realms. the 5 or 6 (Tibetan) you see on the wheel is a simplification.. It is not meant to be a guide or path to travel in those rea...

Re: Does an arahant not feel angry at all?
This hypothetical situation often comes up in buddhist forums.... you refrain from killing...but what if your parents or family are threatened? You would try to reason with the attacker... but to physically attack him would be wrong...you would be no better than he.. Karma will take its course...all...

Re: Where do monks eat?
Monks leaving a temple to go on alms-round return to the temple. Some eat together in a dining hall and also share their food and also get a share of food which has been brought into the temple by lay followers. Usually the monks and novices sit in a line of seniority and the food is placed upon tra...

Re: Dhammadhuta monks
In Thailand the two main schools to which one can be ordained are Dhammayut and Mahanikaya. As we know maha means great so the Mahanikaya is the far larger school. Dhammayut are mainly forest monks, more intent upon patipatta than pariyatta (practice than study). They often keep more strict rules su...

Certainly an Arahant still alive would receive vipaka from previous karma....but have equanimity about it.

Re: Martial Arts
My present teacher uses Tai-Chi to teach mindfulness (vipassana). I used to do karate and particularly enjoyed kata . One is supposed to practice mindfulness at all times so being mindful during the slow purposeful movements of kata or tai-chi or yoga is ideal practice. Even one giving or receiving ...

Robes don't make the monk. I would argue precepts don't make the monk either. Renunciation of saṃsāra is what does. The above is the most amazing reading in this website so far for me..... It is not on the surface.....it is not what you follow.....it is whether you have crossed the line!.....the ma...

Re: The married monk
Since in the theravada tradition a man can ordain and disrobe several times...it is certainly not necessary for him to divorce his wife. I myself ordained for a week seven years ago when they had a mass ordination in my town. I also ordained for two years three years ago, and then disrobed to look a...

Re: Insights from my 21 years of practising Goenka style
If you are in Chiangmai I would suggest going to the temple at Wat Rampoeng for their vipassana meditation retreat. 10 days minimum for non-Thais but recommend the 26 day full retreat. Here they practice the Mahasi Sayadaw style of watching the rise and fall of the breath and also doing walking medi...

Re: Eating after midday.
The Thais have a saying...' One meal a day supports life; a second meal supports work; a third meal supports the kilesa (gives the energy to go out at night and have fun).. The prime work for a monk is to get himself to at least the state of Sotapanna and leave the state of worldly being ....meditat...

Re: Does Thanissaro Bhikkhu believe in a soul?
OMG! The millions of words written about the 'Non-self, No self, not self' thing..... we all have our own understanding about it, or idea of what it means. It is something so profound that only a Buddha can understand and then teach it.....and what does he teach? Not to discuss and think about it......
