The teacher thenn asks the student how many shoes there were by the door of the hall when he was entering. Hello, the story: 35. Every-Minute Zen Zen students are with their masters at last ten years before they presume to teach others. Nan-in was visited by Tenno, who, having passed his apprentice...

Re: Dāna & the poor

One gives shelter by abstaining from killing. http://www.thegamingtailgate.com/forums/images/smilies/Emoticon-Think.gif To take that verse as the only explanation sounds to me like when some people posit what is IMO an abominable view that one should be pacifistic in the face of unjust violence, an...

Re: Dāna & the poor

... Interestingly, they name three types of giving: dharmadana (gift of the teaching), abhayadana (gift of shelter), and amisadana (gift of things). I can't find the text of the work itself to see how they define abhayadana (abhaya literally meaning "fearless"), ... Are there any Canon or Commentar...

What is the purpose of developing jhana in the context of the 8-fold path? ... As a starting point I'd like to observe that samma samadhi is defined in terms of jhana. ... The word that includes kasiṇa DN, MN, SN, AN, KN, Vin, Abh kasiṇa: 22,13,0,50,108,0,159 I found 20 in DN (by search in Chattha Sangayana Tipitaka program). 10 are in Sangiti sutta - the list of 10 kasinas and the similar list of 10 kasinas in Dassuttara sutta, both suttas contain abhidhammapitaka-l...

Re: suttas and the kasinas(vishudhimagga)

Hello, I suppose a kind of meditation somewhat analogous to what Buddhaghosa describes is in Culasunnata sutta - The lesser sutta about voidness. Buddha says there: "Further, Ananda, the monk — not attending to the perception of human being, not attending to the perception of wilderness — attends to...

Re: Pali word of the day

Hi mikenz66,
really I didn't intend to say anything about the number of the sutta, "in this sutta" meant "the sutta David wrote of".))
Though I read English texts I think almost every day, I write English I think a few times a year. So, want to say one thing, it turns out another. )

Hello,

David, thank you for this useful and interesting thread.
David N. Snyder wrote: the seven purifications (satta visuddhi) taught by the Buddha in the Rathavinãta Sutta (M.I,145).
Really vens. Sariputta and Punna Mantaniputta speak of the seven purifications in this sutta.

Hello Tiltbillings, Manapa I think these suttas speak about the question: Mahavedalla sutta : Feeling "'Feeling, feeling': Thus is it said. To what extent, friend, is it said to be 'feeling'?" "'It feels, it feels': Thus, friend, it is said to be 'feeling.' And what does it feel? It feels pleasure. ...

Hello, phil You can look at the section of contemplating "dhammas in dhammas" ( Mental Qualities in Thanissaro bhikkhu translation, Mental Objects in Soma thera and Nanasatta translations) in Satipatthana sutta , the sections about obstacles (nivarana) and factors of enlightment (bojjhanga).
