Re: Arahants

The reason why I'm asking is: if there really would be one, i'd shall go to find out if it's true How would you find out if it's true? well Ajahn Chah was punched to the head and knocked over by the force, he said he should send all his monks to london to practice metta after that. I don't think th...

Re: So this is where you all are...!

I was ordained with the NK* cult until I came to realise the error of my ways back in 1996 Since then I have been following the forest tradition of NE Thailand, and lived with Luangpor Khemadhammo at the forest hermitage in the UK for 4 years. [/b] Now I live in Thailand with my wife. I have spent ...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

Greetings SeerObserver, But are these meditations acts of kusala kamma in and of themselves, or just "geared towards it"? Or is that what you meant by geared towards? They are acts of kusala kamma in themselves, but I say "geared towards" because that's the primary benefit to be...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

Metta (loving-kindness), karuna (compassion) and mudita [/u] are certainly all geared towards of kusala kamma. Because they also reduce the emphasis and focus of thoughts towards ourselves, they also assist in weakening the ego. Right. That's a good association to make with the brahmaviharas. It's ...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

It's possible that I was mistaken. It may have just been that I've seen mention of cessation of evil (at the very least during the session) and purification of the mind. I do thank everyone for their replies. While that may be the case, I am interested to hear Drolma's reply regarding meditation on ...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

There is a sutta in the Anguttara Nikaya (A.iv,392-95) about merit, which I can't find on AccessToInsight... But there is an article by Bhikkhu Bodhi which summarizes it: The Anguttara Nikaya (A.iv,392-95) records a fabulous alms-giving conducted by the Bodhisatta when he was born as a brahman name...

Re: Heavens to betsy

This isn't particularly special, apart from the coffins it sounds like what I've seen at the local Wat. Here the lay person just disappears under a sheet, the monks chant some of the funeral chants about "sankhara anicca...", then they come out and the monks chant some sort of birth chant...

Re: Heavens to betsy

I'd really like to know what the monks are chanting. You struck my curiosity enough. I wasn't going to watch the video at first. I skipped through it to check a few points, but didn't see anywhere in the video that there wasn't the narrator or anything else drowning out the chanting. Please let me ...

Re: Meritorious Meditation

Cool subject, Seer. In my tradition we're taught that meditating on emptiness generates merit :) Would you happen to know what the basis of that is? So far, I can still only see that meditation contributes to cessation of evil and purification of the mind. I still do not see how it contributes to k...

Re: The consequence for using intoxicants

intoxicants inhibit judgment and therefore make you more likely to do things you normally wouldn't. A main point is that it makes you more likely to break the preceding 4 precepts. Buddhists are to cease doing evil, do good, and cultivate purity in the mind. The third is clearly hindered by intoxic...

Meritorious Meditation

As some basic tenets, Buddhists are to cease evil, do good, and purify the mind. In various discussions points are brought up that certain temperament is being cultivated, as well as how one is at the very least not out committing akusala kamma while practicing right meditation, and other things alo...

Re: Thailand travel in the current political climate

Greetings, With a few members in Thailand and a few talking of going there over the next year or so, I thought it might be a good idea to start up a discussion on the subject of travel to, from and within Thailand... and in particular Bangkok, which seems like the hub for public protests. Is it saf...
