Re: the ethics of lay teachers who charge money

Dhamma was intended to be a gift and should remain a gift. It should be given freely to all who wish to receive it. Lay people who wish to share the gift of dhamma to others are more than welcome. Please consider it an offering of dhamma, a meritorious work, a selfless voluntary work . Whether it is...

Re: Questions from the Shameful Bhikkhu

Hi all, I think in order to avoid wrong application and benefit from a practicing guideline it is important to understand the purpose behind it . I believe the practicing guideline of monastics not possessing money is to limit the bhikkhu/ni's ability to follow his/ her endless desires. When this is...

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

Hi Dan, Please check the UNESCO guidelines before attacking them so heavily. Even a certain parts of a Buddhist monastery in Bodhgaya is effected by the regulation/ guideline of maintaining the UNESCO . Btw, why do you see one as rocks and another as not rocks? We are Buddhists here . I am actually ...

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

What I am embarrassed about is the double standard in the name of Metta and Justice . People choose to keep a blind eye to the apparent injustice of one, while tearing another down for a misperceived mistake. This notion of justice is contradictory .

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

Hi Claudia, This is not tit for tat, there are regulations around World Heritage Sites anywhere in the world. For example, part of the Buddhist monasteries in Bodhgaya needs to be removed because it is not suppose to be there. If you check the UNESCO regulations you can see for yourself. Also no one...

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

Are Buddhist and Christian allowed to have monasteries or churches in the Maldives as they do in Sri Lanka ? If no then is this double standard acceptable ? When I was in Bodh Gaya, I heard the Muslim call to prayer over the loud speaker from the mosques and couldn't help think the same thing: how ...

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

I just returned from a week's trip in Sri Lanka and can vouch for mush of what Dissanayake wrote. There are numerous Muslim (and Christian) shrines everywhere, even built at road junctions. Sri Lankans are very tolerant of other faiths, perhaps even too tolerant. I remember I was at a temple and in...

Re: Is it against the dhamma to protect yourself and others ?

Hi all ,

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if anyone know the instruction for lay people about protecting oneself and other innocent people when it comes to violent attacks ?

Re: Is it against the dhamma to protect yourself and others ?

I am sorry that my post was not squarely on topic. ...As to how to defend, I would say to be primarily guided by the Dhamma but of course be sensible and defend when necessary. Hi Dan, No problem. Usually, I didn't think that it is a big deal to focus on a specific issue. But that is the case aroun...

Re: Is it against the dhamma to protect yourself and others ?

HI Dan , This topic is about Muslim and Thai Civilians rather than Tamils and Sri lankans. If you want we can discuss this in another thread on Sri Lankan & Tamils. Usually I wouldn't mind ,but it seems that some people prefer that it focuses on a specific issue only and no related topics at all...

Is it against the dhamma to protect yourself and others ?

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

Since this topic came up I thought maybe I should look into the situations and relationship between Buddhist and Muslims right now and these are some of the information that came up that I haven't noticed before even though some of them just occurred recently as well.

Re: Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrine

It is related to Buddhist and Muslim. So are we only suppose to discuss one aspect and not the other ? So if someone created a thread about how muslim destroy Buddhist lives and property right now , no one is suppose to post anything else about their relationship, conflict, etc..
