Re: Is "Positive thinking" Good or Bad?

I consider positive thinking rather important in the path. That said there is a large gap between positive thinking and throwing your better judgement out the window.

Re: Visiting Sri Lankan Monasteries in May - advice?

Well that packet looks like it is for people on retreat, and as I understand you want to ordain? That makes it difficult to say because they may or may not expect you to follow those rules considering you will be there a week.

Re: Visiting Sri Lankan Monasteries in May - advice?

1.) of course you can study. A place may put an emphasis on meditation (just like any forest monastery) but the time is yours to do what you want with. 2.) you can talk in a monastery. If course don't waste your time gossiping and such but, yes, everyone can talk unless there is a reason not to. 3.)...

Re: What do I do? Questions, questions, questions...

Personally I recommend starting with this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0861714911/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1397656247&sr=8-1 And a good translation of the dhammapada. From there you can work your way into the Samyutta and anguttara nikayas. I also like to download talks from teachers I respect to listen...

Re: Differences Sri Lanka - Thailand

I am writing this as someone who was ordained in Sri Lanka for a short time and is planning to go back, most likely will ordain again. I spent a very short period of time in Thailand after I disrobed which I spend in Wat Pah Nanachat. Also, I am typing this on my phone so please forgive any grammar ...

You can regulate how much you indulge while you learn to step down.

The point of the first tetrad in my opinion is to calm the mind and build concentration which would be done from watching the breath.

Man...This place makes me tired. Every time a thread lasts more than a couple days it always comes to somebody proclaiming how they are right and they won't hear anybody else's answer because it is obviously illogical and wrong. Every time.

Re: Necessity to have a God to tell us what is right and wrong?

I don't think I am able to convince them to understand and get rid of that wrong idea of them. But in my situation, there are too much people getting started to be a Believer and eventually what I said will get 'overwrite' by the other believer'S' Ask them if there was no god and someone cut them o...
