Re: Non-Mahavihara Theravada?
Thanks for the link. I realize now I should have split my post into two questions: 1) Asking for information about the specific views themselves - Mahavihara, Jetavana, Abhayagiri?, etc. I realize I can probably rely on wikipedia but I was holding out for something more academic I guess. 2) These vi...

Re: Non-Mahavihara Theravada?
Is there a book or article or anything where I can read more about the differences between these views being discussed? I've heard it mentioned before that Thai Forest monks may have some views that don't agree with orthodox Theravada teachings and I want to explore this, as I don't normally dig tha...

Stress in modern life
Hello everyone. I have found a great deal of peace through the Dhamma, and it has had a remarkable impact on my ability to deal with the stresses of daily life. My girlfriend, unfortunately, has quite a bit of difficulty with stress. Setbacks during the day (traffic, interruptions of routine, events...

The early schools
Is there a good book or article anyone can recommend that gives an overview of the early schools that came into being after the Buddha died? I am more interested in what is known about the differences in doctrine that started to appear and where they may have led (if anywhere).

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
You're right. You aren't actually causing a loss of goods, or income, but you are directly violating the wishes of the content's creator. Don't you think that is something you should be considering? The fact that by accessing someone's created work and doing so against their wishes, thereby causing...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
You're right. You aren't actually causing a loss of goods, or income, but you are directly violating the wishes of the content's creator. By not being a Christian, for example, you are violating wishes of Christians who want everyone to be Christian. Same for other religions who want everyone to be...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
In that case, I would suppose that, since the precept is being "violated" unknowingly, there shouldn't be as much of a problem. I would assume this is the same as accidentally stepping on a bug - since the action is not being undertaken with such a thought or intention in mind.

Re: Sutta about not listening to music
Very strange. I copied and pasted that directly from the "The Buddhist Monastic Code II". I wonder if he listed the wrong source? Similar to what danieLion mentioned - I'm a musician, and one of the biggest barriers to my meditation practice comes from getting certain segments of songs stu...

Re: Sutta about not listening to music
I had a look through Thanissaro's "The buddhist monastic code". It looks like most references to singing, dancing and music are based on the Rona Sutta There is a dukkata for going to see dancing, singing, or music. According to the Commentary, dancing includes going to see even peacocks d...
