Re: Foods for Anxiety
jhana$ said I'm sorry. I have no intention of being a contrarian, but that is out of date information. I've had an interest in these issues for decades. OK, no problems - so you say that this is out of date and you have better information - please give us that information with references. I am open...

Re: Foods for Anxiety
Yes but in the context of this thread you would want to ensure that measure were taken to ensure that there was enough B12 in the diet - this could be more of a problem if there was also a history of alcohol abuse. That is not a reason not to adopt a vegan diet - just a caution. So many people, veg...

Re: Foods for Anxiety
I take a couple of supplements for more anxiety I guess you mean food for reducing anxiety :). Make sure you eat a basic healthy diet, to make sure you get all of the nutrients you need. I have a friend who has been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. Most of her clients suffer from some sort of a...

Re: Why will meditation not bring more loss and death?
I think that meditation is not for bringing about loss, but rather for generating a sense of urgency -- samvega toward the practice. David, thanks for responding. My question isn't about the purpose of Bhavana ( psychological development ), but about the possible side effects . It seems like Buddhi...

Why will meditation not bring more loss and death?
I think The Five Daily Recollections is probably one of the most healthy meditations a human being can do. You are preparing for things that will happen, before those things happen. There is a near universal folk belief that you tend to get what you focus on? Buddhism, in the suttas and in ethnic fo...

Re: Religious criticism
Because religion is much more important to most people than politics. I think you will find a large portion of the human population of planet Earth disagree with you. Religion and politics supply people with their needs and desires. Politics is all about who gets what, somethng that goes to the cor...

Re: Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'
I thought your point about the term "Western Buddhism" being code for "not the Buddhism Asians do" was a sharp one.

Re: Why Theravada?
I have read recently some of the teachings within the Korean Seon schools. The imply that their practices cut out a lot of talk and conjecture going straight to the core. They speak of Hwadu practices as being a direct path to Enlightenment. For those in here who are aware of this path I am curious...

Re: Religious criticism
A post on another thread got me thinking. Why is it considered taboo to openly criticise another persons religion in most societies but yet perfectly ok to criticise a persons political convictions? Discussing politics gets the same kind of stigma in a number of situations. For example, speaking ou...

Re: Fruition of Kamma in a social level
SarathW, What is the title and who is the author of the book? FWIW, in these short suttas from the Pali Cannon the Buddha states that oridnary people can't know the exact chain of events in kamma that led to their present cirumstances. The Buddha also stated that not everything that happens is the r...

Job Stress, Oy
I've had some job stress in the last few days. I'm in the US, do a job connected with the government, and I have been waiting to see if the government will be shut down in about a week. I heard today that the project I work on *might* come to an end in the forseeable future. I'm very grateful I went...

Re: Query for people experienced with Anapanasati & Goenka s
I'm not an expert. I don't think it matters. I think what matters in the context of that retreat is watching the breath for the first few days as a means of getting relaxed and doing so with your attention focused on a smaller area to build up a little more concentration. Deviated septums and having...

Book Recommendation: Vipassana/Mindfulness Meditation
A friend of mine is interested in learning mindfulness meditation ( vipassana ). She does better when she has written directions. I was thinking of recommending "Mindfulness In Plain English" to her as it is in a plain parlance, as per the title. The take away message, "what has to be done" isn't ob...

Re: Louis CK and sadness
I don't think his point is about sadness. I think his point is that people have compulsive habits like smart phone use, overating, drinking, surfing the net, bickering on the net, etc, because they are terrified being alone with themselves and whatever comes up. In other words, exactly what the dham...

Re: Shooter at DC shipyard was Buddhist
Nobody likes it when people with the same affiliations/demographics as theirs publicly does things they and everyone else would object to. That is something everyone here with an interest in Buddhism has to accept, as well as people with mental illness. It happened, those things are who the shooter ...
