Re: List of all Suttas in the Pali Canon?

I think this here is also very informative: "Essence of Tipiṭaka", from Burma, by U Ko Lay, student of Sayagyi U Ba Khin http://tipitaka.org/eot Not a simple checklist of names. But a short synopsis on every major section in the canon and of dozens if not hundreds of single suttas within them. Might...

Re: Hell from doing metta?

I don't know why someone who is very virtuous, very giving can become a human in a favorable condition or a deva. Id rather do this than do metta and end up in hell. Well, it seems quite obvious to me that "metta cultivation leads to hell" (jhana-cultivation to any degree) is a non-sensical stateme...

Re: Hell from doing metta?

Hell from doing metta? How could doing a good action lead to bad consequences? I have no idea. I also think that makes no sense and is probably a misinterpretation. It seems to contradict this categorical statement about kamma and vipaka: "Monks, these four types of kamma have been directly realize...

Re: Have you laid the groundwork for the destruction of the taints?

I don't what that highlighted quote means. It means, for example, when you're sitting on a train or bus, with your eyes wandering around, and you see a pretty girl's boobs, you don't grasp after the boobs with your mind. (See also: after-boob ) :anjali: As to the questions: 1. no 2. yes 3. not sure...

Re: Dictionary.com is dumb and dishonest

the Dude's wisdom: :goodpost: Actually I am sorry that this may have come off as dismissive in a condescending way. What I meant is: I have no deeper reasoning to discuss, but just an opinion. That's all. I am just too fond of making silly jokes. It's an unwholesome habit that I probably should kee...

Re: Dictionary.com is dumb and dishonest

And a dictionary compiled by a team of academics is smart and honest, and authoritative? Why -- can you justify your reasoning here? That's not my reasoning. So, no, I can't. I also would have assumed that there is probably a team of academics working for dictionary.com. But I'm not sure. As I said...

Re: Dealing with break ups

I don't think it is a justifiable buddhist position to say that avoiding sexual relations with others, but habitually masturbating instead, is better than to engage in faithful sexual relations. And certainly it is not a mode of brahmacariya. easily justifiable -less entaglement -does not involve a...

Dictionary.com is dumb and dishonest

Not sure if maybe better suited for the Lounge, but it's slightly political. From Twitter: The words "mansplain" and "manspread" are hate speech yet I see so many people who oppose hate speech using these words. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech Well, actually, mansplaining refers to the practice of...

Re: Dealing with break ups

Not really wanting to harp on this much, but as a word of advice: I think dictionary.com should not be accepted as an authority on the definition of English words. They are often very inaccurate, discard established conventional meanings in favour of dumbed-down retard newspeak. I'd rather recommend...

be sure you haven't put them on inside out....they should not pop slide and move when you put them on with the correct side to your eye.... Thanks. Yes, that was another thing I had to learn. :o Figured it out after two days. :P (Update: Eye drops seem to be helping so far. More than four ho...

Re: Anyone here wearing contact lenses?

Thanks for all the replies! I've worn contacts for about 10 years now, only the soft kind. I now use dailies, which I prefer and never have had problems with. Buying contact lenses "over-the-counter" is definitely a bad idea. A licensed eye doctor needs to prescribe them so that they can get the bes...

Anyone here wearing contact lenses?

Hello! I'm having trouble with my eyes and coming to ask here as a last resort. I am quite strongly short-sighted (-3.25 dpt on the left, -3.75 dpt on the right). I just broke my glasses a few days ago and now I have to wait at least one more week before I get new ones. So I bought off-the-shelf con...

well, at some point i would like to have those posts edited, they are only a few. and i hope that i will be given the chance to submit the proper texts and images instead of them just deleting the portions of the posts Yes, the inability to edit old posts has its drawbacks. Re: Next 24 hours are super important (huge tensions regarding Syria)

He is going through the same process as with North Korea. Remember the "Fire and fury"? Remember the "I hope we can be friends some day"? Yes. See what direction NK/US relations are going now? I actually don't. Expect to see the same with Russia. Hmm... Relax, it's all going to be okay. (Except for...
