Re: what skills are invaluable

what should a layperson learn as a worldly skill before ordaining. it occurred to me sewing is probably important. cpr? various kinds of medicine CPR, you mean this ? I'm not sure. Why would monks have many occasions where they could use such skills? They are forbidden to practice medicine for gain...

General appreciation thread [muditā]

If this Topic is a bad idea , would someone please lock it? No its not a bad idea, its a very good idea. I appreciate L.N. for (his/her?) constructive attitude, and efforts to keep things on a good track. I agree, I think it's a very good idea, it's not a bad idea at all, because... why not? despit...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

The Buddha praised vast learning. I think expecting non-critique of Islam is non-Buddhist. I think Buddhists should learn about the wholesome & unwholesome aspects of Islam. Greetings DooDoot, Thanks for sharing your insights. I second that. Your contributions throughout the various threads on thes...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

so that we can empower the reform movement against the fundamentalists Seriously? A Buddhist forum to empower the reform movement against fundamentalist Islamism? We should reform Islam? I really don't think many muslims would listen to buddhists' ideas on how to reform their religion on some inter...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Hi perkele I think specifically the first post from Modus.Ponens (& conected posts) are not appropriate, offensive and disrespectful and should have been removed at the time and should be removed now. I don't see what sense that would make. That the mentioned post was inappropriate, offensive and d...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I don't think it is generally a good idea to delete threads or make them invisible for eternity in most cases. Thank you David. You might want to have a look at this thread as well (even though it is very old). https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=4713 There was discussion, disparagement, disagre...

Re: Bodhisattva Path of Theravada

I meant he doesn't deliberately not progress, but rather progresses over lifetimes, perfecting the paramitas. He doesn't get full-enlightenment and then forego nibbana, the way a Mahayana enlightened master would, as far as I understand the concept and differences between Theravada and Mahayana. I ...

Re: Bodhisattva Path of Theravada

And then the other big difference is that the Bodhisatta in Theravada does not "forego" nibbana for saving other sentient beings, rather he perfects his paramitas over numerous liftetimes. Well, it seems he forgoes it at least for the several eons through which he has to perfect his paramita in ord...

Re: Muhammad - Worthy of respect?

LN - Do you have suttas where the Buddha taught that it is better to remain silent when there is injustice? Yes, too bad you have not read the Kakacupama Sutta (or Saw). If one considers physical or verbal assault "injustice", then study the Buddha's advice. That is about harsh treatment levelled a...

Re: Right Speech: Getting Personal

I hope not to be the pig in these discussions, but Sam Vara and I are getting muddy. It is not enjoyable. I think you have started the mud-wrestling. Excuse me for getting personal. I may have misunderstood you. /.../ Please let me know if this understanding is incorrect. When you stated, "The same...

Re: Muhammad - Worthy of respect?

Kamma-phala suggests that injustice & justice are non sequiturs. This is, at the very least, a close contender for "dumbest bullshit I have ever read on this forum". The words "justice" and "injustice" have meaning and can describe realities. People can be justly or injustly accused, critized, prai...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

This is not a black-and-white issue between forbidding all discussion of other faiths versus allowing wholesale disparagement of any kind. A reasonable line could be drawn such that comments which show open contempt for other traditions are a violation of TOS. While in theory this sounds plausible,...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

They self-identify as Buddhists. Does that make them Buddhists? In my private language : "being a buddhist" = "self-identifying as buddhist and believing in the Buddha as a spiritual authority showing an actual path to salvation (although not necessarily understanding his teachings and following th...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I don't think the posts are viewed as a violation of TOS, so reporting them will not prevent some Buddhists here from disparaging other faiths. /.../ Maybe if enough members start reporting posts which disparage other faiths, it will make a difference? I encourage Members to speak out. I am sure th...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Do you believe that all or most or many muslims think that way towards you (as well as towards other "infidels)? Yes. It's part of their doctrine. I'm not well-versed in their doctrine. Maybe their doctrine states that this is what will happen to unbelievers but this wouldn't imply that they hope f...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

. Buddhists are persecuting Rohingya Muslims Now you are disparaging Buddhists! Yes. Just because some journalists and politicians call some Burmese people "Buddhists" doesn't make those people Buddhists. Religious identifications aren't to be taken so easily. Well, they are most probably buddhist ...

The translation is I.B. Horner's. Thanks Bhante. Ayya Vimala already clarified this for me on SuttaCentral . I had forgotten to edit my post. On Sutta Central if someone posts a link to an English translation, like this: https://suttacentral.net/en/mn61 you can find out who the translator is by rem...

Re: AN 10.76: What do shame, remorse, and negligence refer to?

In light of such possibilities, could it not make sense that the Buddha recommended feeling remorseful in response to certain situations (actions one performed, by body, speech or mind)? (I'll have to look for that older thread.) Please do find that older thread; it sounds interesting! I'm sorry to...
