Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

You haven't offended me, no worries. Glad to hear that. :anjali: Most of us here have often played the board game Monopoly. And I'm also quite sure that virtually all of you played it assuming the following "rule" to be true: that whenever you land on the space called "Free Parking", you win a $500...

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

there were much more often times when the Buddha set limits and checks on the senior monks (giving them no special "invincibility" above younger monks in many, many ways), so that they would not conveniently use and abuse the authority they had, to oppress the younger monks. Bhante, I don't dispute...

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

I was wondering why the westerners seems like never stays with their parents/elders , or taking care of their wellbeing even though they are in good terms ? Even the Asian peoples nowadays are leaving behind traditional values and pursuing so called material comfort and happiness that we modern wor...

Re: Did you observe Uposatha today?

Did you observe Uposatha today? Not consciously. But at leat I have not broken any of the five precepts, have not eaten more than one meal (but drank lots of coffee and smoked cigarettes like a firebox), not slept very much. So maybe a half-arsed almost-Uposatha . if no, why? Addiction to entertain...

/.../ I don't understand what your point is. You tell a story and fill in how you interpret it. So? From a list of previously suggested topics for discussion: 5. Seniority principle (respect) is in accord with the nature law , similar to filial piety , is a kind of virtue not otherwise . That is on...

Re: Is the new "Spread Mind" philosophy actually Buddhism?

Three (of many) of his ideas are as follows: - Consciousness is the object one is conscious of. - A physical entity exists if and only if it is the actual cause of something else. - The past is not defined until it produces an effect, but once it does, the past has been defined since it occurred or...

Re: Sāriputta in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta?

But at no point in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta is it said that the Buddha passed through or stayed at Sāvatthī. Sāriputta met the Buddha at Nāḷandā, which is on the way. Indeed, and that would fit well with the beginning of the Maha-parinibbana route. But when Ven. Cunda (Sariputta's attendent at his...

Re: Looking for a story or sutta

Reminds me of this sutta here: SN 14.15 The monks’ specialties Then the Blessed One addressed the monks, “Do you, bhikshus, see Sāriputta pacing and down with some monks?” “Yes, bhante.” “All of them, bhikshus, are monks of great wisdom. Do you, bhikshus, see Mahā Moggallāna pacing and down with som...

Re: Sāriputta in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta?

I am reading DN 16 now, and I saw Sāriputta mentioned therein (declaring his bull's statement that there has never been, will be nor is now anyone greater than the Buddha), and I was like "Wait a minute, didn't Sāriputta die long before the Buddha's last journey?". In DN 16, he is mentioned precise...

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

I think senior monks, as well as junior monks or anyone else should discuss whatever they need to discuss in order to further their understanding of the Dhamma. To do this as a performance of monastics before laypeople would seem likely to be driven by wrong motivation to me, except when they are ve...

Re: Diversity among mods

I found the original suggestion here actually quite good. If I could nominate someone: I imagine No_Mind or Bundokji could make for good moderators. Not out of tokenism or something, but because I find them fitting personality-wise, and yeah, I imagine it would make for a more interesting mix. But i...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

A sotāpanna cannot break the 5 precepts. /.../ AN 5.279 https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an05/an05.179.than.html Again, these are stated as sufficient conditions, which may be overstated (complementing the necessary conditions listed in the "impossibilities", which may be understated). i...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

So to summarize... I agree with this: My understanding is that a stream-winner can break any of precepts on very rare conditions and never up to the level of gravity when this will lead him to rebirth as animal or worse 8-) Generally, he is very virtuous all the time, for sure. But still - no, he is...

i see your edit perkele, well negligent manslaughter by non-intervention isn't a real thing. no kamma
I beg to differ.
Florida teens who recorded drowning man will not be charged in his death.
They may be deemed "innocent" by the law, but in my eyes they are guilty of murder.

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

i think i know what you're saying, but the fivefold dread being allayed is one part and the four limbs is another. you have to have both and when you have both you can declare yourself a stream enterer I think you don't understand what I was saying. i don't imagine the buddha would have overstated ...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

this makes the case very clearly to me That seems convincing. However, one might say the same to this as you said above about the list of impossibilities (which only lists specific cases of killing as impossible for a sotapanna), only in reverse: doesnt say those are 6 defining criteria, just that ...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

doesnt say those are 6 defining criteria, just that sotāpanna wouldnt do them But why would the Buddha iterate and emphasize exactly these specific impossibilities - including just three specific impossible cases of killing (one's own mother, one's own father, or an arahat)? Why would he not simply...

Dhamma Wheel is an Internet forum, it doesn't rule the world. Dare I say it, perhaps some folks should try and get out more?
Are you implying there exists a world beyond this forum?
Please provide some evidence for such bold metaphysical claims.
