Re: metta.lk domain name expired. What happens?

If anyone wants to help include more there, too, so it can be preserved in one more place on the internet for some time, they could come on the sangham.net forum to help. It is just a matter of asking for permission from the right places to make sure it is allowed to copy, and formatting some HTML ...

Re: Why is Nirvana permanent?

Possibly, the term "a + pavattā" does not refer to the non-continuance of Nibbana but, instead, refers to the non-continuance of samsara, i.e. to non-continuance of 'vatta'. I second DooDoots interpretation. The non-continuance of everything else. Does that imply "eternity"? No. If you ask me, I th...

All phenomena ( damma) is subject to momentary changes as the universe or universes is in an eternal flux and rotation. Wrong. sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā — "all saṅkhārā (conditioned things) are impermanent" sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā — "all saṅkhārā are unsatisfactory" sabbe dhammā anattā All saṅkhārā are a...

Re: What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana?

I found this sutta, which seems also interesting in clarifying somewhat what these arupa states are about: /.../ "Monk, the property of light is discerned in dependence on darkness. The property of beauty is discerned in dependence on the unattractive. The property of the dimension of the infinitude...

Re: What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana?

I don't know where I have read about these relations. Maybe if I could find the source of these statements that I remember this would help to clarify what the arupajhānāni (pl.?) are about. I found it: I tell you, monks, awareness-release through good will has the beautiful as its excellence — in t...

What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana? How this relates to Vinnana in Dependent Origination? Please also consider the Vinnanayatana in 18 Dhatus. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=y6TUD2nUBDgC&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=vinnanayatana&source=bl&ots=2JyMdXlGc...

Re: Why forth Jhana is not infinitude of consciousness?

Thanks OP corrected. The OP was not incorrect. In common speech, "boundless" = "unbounded" means about the same as "infinite" (although mathematically there is a distinction). But "unbound", on the other hand, is something different (meaning something like "free", or "released"). Bhikkhu Thanissaro...

Re: Why forth Jhana is not boundless consciousness?

Restricted to the body. Could I say that jana is linked with the mind while boudlessness is with the state of nirvana. pls see Bahiya sutta. Sarath seems to be speaking about the "dimension of inifinitude of consciousness" or "boundless consciousness" (Pali viññāṇañcāyatana , Skt. vijñānānantyāyata...

Re: Gautama a.k.a. Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

One can not abandon his family to ordain without permission. Here it is only the children who may not abandon their parents (or entire clan, with point 14) without their permission, and obtain the going-forth. The other direction has found no consideration in monastic rules, apparently. The monasti...

Re: Gautama a.k.a. Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

And why quote post from another thread here? How is that relevant here? Oh boy... That was the thread which kicked off this thread. The last posts there belong to the same topic. And, true, this tangent about Indian culture started with DooDoot bringing in you being Indian, somewhat mockingly - to ...

Re: Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

I kept culture and nationality out of it till he/she forced me to reply using "cultural appropriations". No. You have been culturally appropriating from the beginning by accusing others of culturally appropriating your 2500 year old Indian culture when they try to give a historical outsider's persp...

Re: Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

I had specifically requested in OP to avoid "historical cultural appropriation" (East vs West and this kind of shock is well absorbed in arranged marriages argument) but then a member went ahead and posted a video from YT and I had to correct him/her. Rather odd that in such cases how the rebuke is...

Re: Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

Gotama's wife was obviously well cared for and, as the mother to the next king (Rahula), probably treated with high regard & respect. Today, in the world, there are many single mothers, who chose to be supported by government pensions. Women find purpose in motherhood; as long as they are cared for...

Re: metta.lk domain name expired. What happens?

I often use tipitaka from this site. Many translated sutta is available just on this site, not accesstoinsight or not suttacentral. There is this older copy of metta.lk tipitaka collection on awake.kiev.ua: http://awake.kiev.ua/dhamma/tipitaka/index.html Maybe not all texts that were on metta.lk ar...

Re: Drop in, drop out, drop in, drop out...

I read DhammaWheel almost everyday, mostly just a quick look in and out (and usually several times a day). I look mostly at threads whose titles catch my interest or which have been posted by people whose perspectives have caught my interest in the past (and whom I have affection for). I want to fol...
