Re: A few questions...

After having gone off-topic already, going one step further up the ladder: this is not a good translation imo i have a better one in russian, translates Fuel for Residue and also emphasises the death as exhastion of fuel in the ladder . This is a ladder : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commo...

Re: A few questions...

Even if we reject the idea that lay arahants are mentioned in the suttas, there is still the Commentaries, which definitely mention lay arahants. I do not contradict the commentary position that on rare occasion a layperson may even attain full enlightenment very suddenly, whereupon he would have t...

Re: A few questions...

There are some passages in the Anguttara Nikaya that appear to suggest householders attaining enlightenment. Here's one of them: //...// "has seen deathlessness realized the highest" I doubt the accuracy of this (but not only this) translation, and I don't believe that the sutta was supposed to ref...

Re: Poll - If you had to kill in self-defense would you?

The suttas often describe how a King executes a murderer, thief or adulterer for their crimes. These suttas say the murderer, thief or adulterer commits bad karma but they do not comment on the King. That is probably because the person (or people) being taught at that point is supposed to identify ...

Re: The Buddha displaying sense of humor

I don't think this was meant to be humourous by the Buddha. It may appear humourous to some of us, due to certain connotations of expressions in our modern parlance. There are quite a number of passages in the Pali canon which I perceive as humourous, while I think they were probably not intended to...

Re: Poll - If you had to kill in self-defense would you?

If a man looks into a mirror and an ass peers back, is it the fault of the mirror? Oh, there we go. Constructive criticism taken as offense, as usual. The question is clear enough. If you had to kill in self-defense would you? Yes/No The question, if taken as just the sentence "If you had to kill i...

Re: Poll - If you had to kill in self-defense would you?

Only 16% of those who visited had an anonymous opinion about killing in self defense .. an important opinion if there was one, among philosophers. You should read the OP more carefully. The question is not about an opinion. It is about the outcome of a potential (yet highly hypothetical/improbable)...

If anyone wants to help include more there, too, so it can be preserved in one more place on the internet for some time, they could come on the sangham.net forum to help. It is just a matter of asking for permission from the right places to make sure it is allowed to copy, and formatting some HTML ...

Re: Why is Nirvana permanent?

Possibly, the term "a + pavattā" does not refer to the non-continuance of Nibbana but, instead, refers to the non-continuance of samsara, i.e. to non-continuance of 'vatta'. I second DooDoots interpretation. The non-continuance of everything else. Does that imply "eternity"? No. If you ask me, I th...

Re: What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana?

I found this sutta, which seems also interesting in clarifying somewhat what these arupa states are about: /.../ "Monk, the property of light is discerned in dependence on darkness. The property of beauty is discerned in dependence on the unattractive. The property of the dimension of the infinitude...

Re: What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana?

I don't know where I have read about these relations. Maybe if I could find the source of these statements that I remember this would help to clarify what the arupajhānāni (pl.?) are about. I found it: I tell you, monks, awareness-release through good will has the beautiful as its excellence — in t...

What is Vinnanacayatana "The Base of Infinite Consciousness" in Arupavacara Jhana? How this relates to Vinnana in Dependent Origination? Please also consider the Vinnanayatana in 18 Dhatus. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=y6TUD2nUBDgC&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=vinnanayatana&source=bl&ots=2JyMdXlGc...

Re: Why forth Jhana is not infinitude of consciousness?

Thanks OP corrected. The OP was not incorrect. In common speech, "boundless" = "unbounded" means about the same as "infinite" (although mathematically there is a distinction). But "unbound", on the other hand, is something different (meaning something like "free", or "released"). Bhikkhu Thanissaro...

Restricted to the body. Could I say that jana is linked with the mind while boudlessness is with the state of nirvana. pls see Bahiya sutta. Sarath seems to be speaking about the "dimension of inifinitude of consciousness" or "boundless consciousness" (Pali viññāṇañcāyatana , Skt. vijñānānantyāyata...

Re: Gautama a.k.a. Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

One can not abandon his family to ordain without permission. Here it is only the children who may not abandon their parents (or entire clan, with point 14) without their permission, and obtain the going-forth. The other direction has found no consideration in monastic rules, apparently. The monasti...
