Re: the 6R for Right Effort?

So that brings up my first question again: “At the release step, where do I put my attention if not on my breath?” As I understand it you have to put your attention on the next steps untill you reach the last one and than you can put it back on the breath. Otherwise you would be doing the steps wit...

Looking for clarification about the Mahasi method

In http://aimwell.org/malukyaputta.html Mahasi Sayadaw advises against conceptualising during the practice. For example: You must seize the first critical moment when sense-door consciousness first arises. If you fail to do so, you will be deluded by conceptual knowledge. If you fail to note seeing ...

Re: Europe monastery (forest monk) as good as in asian?

far far faar away from politic (myanmar and recently sri lanka... :( ). I think that both in Myanmar and Sri lanka there are good monasteries with good abbots who follow strict vinaya, teach and practice the Dhamma well and stay aways from politics whatsoever. If you are worried about those countri...

I just realize that the story sound alot like the stage of “equanimity about formations” that is prior to stream entry, in the pure vipassana progression of insight.
I didn't know that you could practice it directly like this.

Re: Informations about Ajahn Kevali

One question about family, can one bhikkhu make a hug to his mother? According to vinaya: Thanissaro Bhikkhu, in his 'Buddhist Monastic Code' states that "The Vinita-vatthu contains cases of a bhikkhu who caresses his mother out of filial affection, one who caresses his daughter out of fatherly aff...

Re: Chanting and the 7th precept

Thank you dylanj, that link is very helpful.
So from what I understand chanting with intonation is allowable but with drawbacks, as listed in Gītassara Sutta.
And I assume chanting accompanied with music would be out of line with the Dhamma.

Chanting and the 7th precept

I was wondering, does listening to chanting accompanied with music break the 7th precept? "7. Nacca-gita-vadita-visuka-dassana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from dancing, singing, music, going to see entertainments." Searching for some metta chanting I saw that in...

Searching for a sutta

Anyone know from which sutta is this story? In this talk, Luang Por said he ordained when he was twenty years old and after seven years of living as a monk, he realized he was not making much progress in his meditative practice and that he did not really understand what the Middle Path was. He thoug...

If you want to be enlightened read Dhamma books, listen to Dhamma audio and do not discuss it in a forum .. discuss it in person if needed ..or if you have a knowledgeable friend here ask him by PM.
You forgot the most important part, after you read or hear some dhamma you have to practice it.

Re: Religious miracles and the Buddhist view

From buddhist pov this 'miracles' connected with praying to god or to a saint, or visiting a holy place can be explaned either as manifestation of direct karma or with compassionate devas who are helping the ones in need. However such 'miracles' happen to all kind of ppl, not just christians. There ...

Hi, this white "dimension" sound a lot like fully developed white kasina. As you say it was a lucid dream. Is it possible that the idea of a real place with other beings in it could be just an interpretation of your mind while dreaming and not an actual deva world? About the white kasina here's an e...

Sorry I dont have his book "Mindfulness, Bliss, And Beyond: A Meditator's Handbook" and I can't comment what he writes there why he would contradict himself. To me the advise your teacher gave you seems more sound. Btw congratulations on your good progress in meditation. I'm sure that with more prac...

Re: when nimitta comes what we should do? see the nimitta?

Since the term nimitta, as we use it, comes from the Visuddhimagga, according to it there are 2 types of nimitta. The uggaha-nimitta (taken-up sign or learning sign) which is usually dull, unstable, may move around or keep appearing and disapearing. The advice not to pay attention to it and keep you...
