Re: Questions about becoming a monk

I had an apartment and bills to pay etc. What I did was I gave someone to stay there temporarily with less price and partially paid by myself. What I believe is that when we think of becoming monk, whatever arises in our mind (including future employment, food and living condition at monastery, and ...

Re: Questions about becoming a monk

I stayed at Na Uyana Srilanka For about 3 months. Very conducive environment for seclusion and meditation. It is one of the largest monastery with more than 5000 acres forest/land area. About 100-120 monks live there including 15-20 foreign monks coming from different countries (US, Canada, Japan, I...

Re: Can intention of renunciation ever be unwholesome?

Thank you.Now I got what you meant. It seems that my problem is jumping directly towards bhikkhuhood without passing the transition phase i.e. anagarika. Thank you for opening my eyes. Next time my approach is to remain anagarika for a length of time and try to see how things move on.

Re: Can intention of renunciation ever be unwholesome?

Hello Modus Ponens, Thank you for your postreply Yes, I have seriously pondered to go to a monastary to live as an anagarika but for now I am reverted back to normal daily life due to the reasons posted earlier. My approach of following the dhamma is you suggested "If you are so enthusiastic ab...

Re: Can intention of renunciation ever be unwholesome?

Hello friends, I am still strongly looking for ordination but the situation is not that favorable. Recently, I visited Na Uyana and stayed there for about 3 months. I went there with a wish to ordain but the parental insistence and unhappiness along with some visa issue made me revert back to worldl...

Re: Ordination in Sri Lanka

I lived at Na Uyana about 3 months as a lay practitioner. I felt like this is the ideal place for contemplation and meditation. The area is very large; may be the largest on the earth as a Buddhist Monastic area. In size, it is about 10 times larger than Pa Auk monastery, Burma with about 10 times l...

How to convert "Morning walk" into "walking meditation"?

These are the five rewards for one who practices walking meditation. Which five? He can endure traveling by foot; he can endure exertion; he becomes free from disease; whatever he has eaten & drunk, chewed & savored, becomes well-digested; the concentration he wins while doing walking medit...

Re: Can intention of renunciation ever be unwholesome?

Excerpts from Latukikopama Sutta: The Quail Simile seems to be relevant here " Suppose there were a poor person, penniless & indigent, with a single little shack — dilapidated, open to the crows, not the best sort; and a single bed — dilapidated, not the best sort; and a single pot of rice ...

Re: list of all theravada monk vows

4 parajikas (defeats) The four parajikas (defeats) are rules entailing expulsion from the monastic Order (Sangha) for life. If a monk or nun breaks any one of the rules he/she is automatically 'defeated' in the holy life and falls from monkhood immediately. He is not allowed to become a monk again ...

Re: Do it yourself!

1. It is possible although might be tougher to resist due to likely vicissitude. Nepal and India still have a large number of such renunciates. 2. First try to live life in ashrams or monasteries and observe their daily lifestyles with minimum requirements of life. You can move from one ashram or mo...

Re: Can intention of renunciation ever be unwholesome?

I guess it is both. As venerable bhikkhu Pesala had pointed out:
I think there can always be mixed motivations when we do anything wholesome.
