Re: Nibbana as a dhamma in Classical Theravāda

Anihilationism was considered by Buddha to be the best of the wrong views. I can't recall Buddha said like this. There is a sutta that states that, but I can't think of it offhand. Probably one of the MN suttas. :anjali: Mike Perhaps AN 10.29? The MN ones (60 & 74) also certainly point that way. “B...

Re: What does it mean to have no views?

There is also another sutta (that I'd be glad if someone could provide the reference for; Zom I think you've posted it before) whose message is similar to the raft simile: one desires something and once one has achieved the goal of that desire, the desire fades...something like that. Possibly, SN 5...

Re: Hi from Queensland Australia

Hello Carl, Welcome. There is a knowledgeable professor in University of Queensland that you might want to investigate. He is called Roderick Bucknell. He was ordained under Buddhadasa (a prominent Thai monk) and disrobed afterwards. He has also written and translated a few books and is kind person ...

Re: Stranded On An Island

I'd invite this man.

But answering the question, I think I'd take only one item. A survival book that doesn't require any man-made items. It would teach how to make tools, huts, etc. from scratch.

Re: what bothers you among world issues?

Whether I bother with them or not, they will be there anyway. I save myself from worrying about them. Many of them are due to wrong decisions being made by massive numbers of people. On this scale, only instruction and education can help. So, what can I do? The only thing I can do is prevent myself ...

Re: In matters of taste, there can be no disputes

I vaguely recall there being a sutta where 5 kings each claim that one of the senses is chief, and then the Buddha comes along and sets them straight but I forget how. If anyone knows the reference and any other relevant references, it would be appreciated. The discourse you mention is SN 3.12 (Fiv...

Re: In matters of taste, there can be no disputes

The gist of the following verse reflects the idea that is present in that saying: The passion for his resolves is a man's sensuality, not the beautiful sensual pleasures found in the world. The passion for his resolves is a man's sensuality. The beauties remain as they are in the world, while the wi...

Re: Differences between the Pāḷi Nikāyas & Chinese Āgamas

Hi there, this is my 1st post. Some part of my research is comparing, directly to Pali and Chinese (Taisho), Mahānidāna Sutta (大緣方便經) in Nikāyas and Āgamas. Briefly, main structure of suttas are similar but details. To consider which part is true or fault, we have to research in other suttas which ...

Re: What is "Jhana" accordingly to the Suttas?

So, please cite your source. I am interested in seeing it. It's probably this (but there is no mention of jhāna in this text): Now at that time Ven. Sariputta was sitting behind the Blessed One, fanning him. The thought occurred to him, "Indeed, it seems that the Blessed One speaks to us of the aba...

Re: Carvaka arguments against Buddhism

Although it has always struck me that the jhanas come across as just another form of hedonism, just more refined. Indeed. If "the jhānas come across as just another form of hedonism", one would have to agree. It's a 'non-sensual' hedonism, if it could be called that. [Description of the four Jhānas...
