Re: Monks/Nuns and Music
Thank you Ben for the quick reply. Now, I have question related to Mahayana/Tibetan Buddhism and other sects. Do monks/nuns in Buddhism other than Theravada allowed to do music (singing, instruments etc.)? The Komuso monks in the Zen tradition used to play a bamboo flute called Shakuhachi, but they...

Re: A new interpretation of the Pali Canon
(...) If there's one thing you take out of this post, please let it be that this is not a doctrine to be intellectually analysed and radical conclusions drawn from. It is a doctrine to be practised. Only by practising the Noble Eightfold Path (of which meditation is a large proportion) can one come...

Re: Does metta-bhavana literally impact others?
In my own experience, I've noticed a literal impact on the objects of my metta-bhavana practice. It obviously benefits the meditator, but I have no doubt that it also benefits the object. I guess we could have a very differente world if more and more people start practicing metta. When an attitude o...

Re: Smiling in meditation
I find consciously smiling a small smile to be a great tool, both while meditating and in many other situations, as a reminder that 'it's all good'...it manages to lighten many a load and has the ability (for me anyway) to put one's self in a good (better) 'space'...I highly recommend acquiring the...

Obviously is not Theravada, but Thich Nhat Hanh instructs to do sitting meditation with a gently smile.

But why we supose it has to be all knowing? It could be like the Force concept in Star Wars.clw_uk wrote: If there is a God that is the "source" or "ground of being" etc then on some level it "designed" or created the universe and if its all knowing it knew how it would end up

Very interesting question. I guess it worth it's own tread.vinasp wrote:If a student of the teachings believes that everything that the Buddha said is true , then what happens when / if he finds a contradiction in the teachings.

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
It can become an exploration, not always comfortable, in looking at these things, or it becomes a matter of emotional comfort in believing what one believes. Yea, I can undersand your point. I'm trying to explore and do my best, but I'm afraid that sometimes it's hard to move away from my comfort z...

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
I'm skeptical when i read certain things, that the Buddha actually said them. Such skepticism arises, and its not usually based on emotion. But i also recognize that i'm not nearly enlightened enough to make such distinctions, so i try (not always successfully) to be as open-minded and uncritical a...

Hi Quinn! It's really great to see a boy learning and sharing the Dhamma with his father.
