Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

Thanks all for your insights thus far. So am I capturing the spirit of the majority opinion here by saying that the difference between vipassana and samatha versions of anapanasati would be in the "willingness" to be distracted? So for instance, when I'm trying to concentrate I will often get rumbl...

Re: Losing friendships

Hello:

Closest friends will stick around, but you probably won´t see them so often as you used to do.
But you have to show them affection from time to time, so they can know you still care.

Re: MN 43: What is meaning by "his faculties are exceptionally clear"?

Dear forum MN 43 is translated as follows: Friend, there are these five faculties each with a separate range, a separate domain, and they do not experience one another’s range & domain: the eye-faculty, the ear-faculty, the nose-faculty, the tongue-faculty, & the body-faculty. What is the differenc...

Re: Overcoming Fear of Death

Hello:

By living a good life you give up most of the fear of death (if you believe in heaven/hell/rebirth).
If that is not enough work on your understanding and personal views about what happens at the time of death.

Re: Is it okay to read buddhist text while i am using the toilet, having a smoke?

Ive been reminded by a few Mahayana layfolk to treat the dhamma with respect and as such only leave Buddhist text in clean places. Such as, no putting any Buddhist book behind the toilet etc. I do not know whether they are just expressing their opinion or it is a real rule in Mahayana Buddhism. Doe...

Re: Can everyone share their views on dependent origination ?

Greetings , I was wondering if anyone can share their own understanding of how the dependent origination goes about ? Each one explain in their own way so that one can learn from each other, what do you think ? Hello: The way i would explain it is that due to ignorance we get involved with a proces...

No, it would be a racialist argument, but not racist. Racism is about domination/power. Saying that Westerners can do Buddhism (an Asian philosophical/religious system) better than Asians sounds racist , especially when one considers the effects of Western colonialism in the Asian region. Hello Gri...

Well, I think it's far from true. There is "folk" and "essential" Buddhism in both Asia and in the West, and I think that it's easy to mix up the two:

Whether you call it "race", "culture", "background", "geography", or whatever, doesn't actually change the meaning does it? It's still a dismisal of a large group of people. Mike Hello Mikenz66: "Lord, there is a country called Sunaparanta. I am going to live there." " Punna, the Sunaparant...

If that is true western monasteries or forest traditions are a better option at this time?. Regards. Now that is a white western convert wet dream if I hav...

Re: Should I even be meditating yet?

Hello ScottPen: You received good advice. This is just like everything else, if you want to play tennis without learning proper technique, you can do it, and you will learn a lot just by playing and personal experience, but eventually you will hit a ceiling with your progress. And thats where the di...

Re: I agree with theravada monk but disagree with universal buddhism

Hello: Its ok to have our own interpretations!, and that person preserves the truth when he talks this way: "such is my interpretation". And if that person after being questioned is able to give a logical answer ("such is my interpretation because of this reasons"), there should be no problem. But w...

Hello:

In the suttas there is the "gandhabba" state, and depending on your grasp of the concept it could be called either an intermediate state or just another kind of becoming.
