Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

@2600htz and justindesilva: Sorry I missed it. May be the word “automatically” needs to removed from my statement:” "It is true that Buddha Dhamma is Dependent Origination (DO), or Paticca Samuppada. But that is not separate from Tilakkhana (Characteristics of Nature: anicca, dukkha, anatta). Under...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Hello Lal: 1) You are getting into several different discussions in this topic, so i was hesitated to ask another question, but because you are well versed its fun to get your responses, so i ask. 2) You previously stated (Wed Jul 25, 2018 5:53 am) "It is true that Buddha Dhamma is Dependent Origina...

Re: Vegetarians and depression

Hello: Im talking just from experience, but i think the increase in depressive symptoms its mainly because most people who become vegetarians do it with a mind full of aversion (they don´t like the idea of animals being butchered, they dislike the posture of society, many display strong aversion jus...

Re: Buddhism and memory

Hello:

Because its not fundamental to the practice.
The aggregate of perception contains memory, but we don´t really NEED to know that.

Re: Inferred Jhana

You said Nibbana is the destruction of the taints (asava), and whats the destruction of the taints, but the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation [of dukkha], extinguishment ?. Do you have other interpretation?. Thank you 2600htz. The destruction of the taints...

Re: Inferred Jhana

The whole paragraph its talking about cessation of perception and feeling, or nibbana. Nibbana is the destruction of the taints (asava) and this paragraph does not appear to be about the cessation of perception and feeling; given the exact same passage is found in AN 11.7, as follows: It could be, ...

Re: Inferred Jhana

Hello:

The whole paragraph its talking about cessation of perception and feeling, or nibbana.
The beginning it could be talking about kasina meditation, but i don´t really know if thats the order the elements are used, or if they correspond to each jhana.

Re: The Buddha's Masters are in hell?

Hello: Yeah, it doesn´t make much sense that they don´t get to be reborn in a formless realm in their next birth. BUT, going to a bad realm, even hell, after that one lifespan in the formless realm its over, its not that crazy. “Mendicants, these four people are found in the world. What four? Firstl...

Re: Why don't people remember their past lives according to the suttas?

Hello: People don´t remember their past lives because their minds are not concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, and people don´t direct their minds and incline it to knowledge of the recollection of past lives...

Re: When was Gotama a sotapanna?

Hello:

I think he was technically a sotapanna for like a second.
Him being a sotapanna in a previous life makes no sense, since a buddha awakens to the path, discovers the path.

Re: Jhanas Experienced in Nibbana: A way to understand Nibbana

Hello Robert123 There are many questions in your topic, but, you could say there are 4 kinds of nibbana: nibbana as living experience, the attainment of nibbana, a parinibbana, and a mundane kind of nibbana. a)Nibbana as living experience is what you call an arahant, a perfect one. Nibbana means "pu...

Re: Jhanas and Nirvana

Should every person who is going to attain the Nirvana follow the 1-8 jhanas? Or the jhanas only work for some? For example, I know there were many who attained the Nirvana just by listening to a dhamma talk or cleaning a compond of the monastery? So I feel like working on 1-8 jhanas kinda only spe...

Re: Signs of Kali Yuga

Is Kali Yuga mentioned in the Suttas or only in Hindu scriptures? I remember an ISKCON guru telling me that when it gets really bad people will start eating their kids. Lovely thought 😊 The Wheel-turning Emperor (Excerpt) Cakkavatti Sutta (DN 26) Introduction The body of this sutta consists of a na...

Re: Dangers of Meditation

Hello: Well i disagree with the "meditation is doing nothing" statement, but yes, like with everything, there is a potential danger in doing the meditation. Why bother with meditation when it's only going to bring out the worst from inside of you?, i also don´t think that is right, it shouldn´t only...
