Re: insight requires access concentration?

Hello Budo: 1)"When there is discernment" (from MN-43). As long as there is consciousness/cognition, the person is able to discern. "Discernment & consciousness, friend: Are these qualities conjoined or disjoined? Is it possible, having separated them one from the other, to delineate the difference ...

Re: insight requires access concentration?

Hello Budo: I don´t agree with some of the things you are saying. -Where did the Buddha said there is no mindfulness in the formless jhanas? -Where did the Buddha said you should get out of jhana to bring back our mindfulness? -What do you mean by "discernment"? (and by discernment not being present...

Re: insight requires access concentration?

That quote is a bit tricky 2600hz. You grabbed that from the anapanasati sutta. The last tetrad of anapanasati is focusing on dispassion, cessation, relinquishment, 5 aggregates, etc. However, if 'right' jhana is involved that means the 5 hinderances are involved and that is insight because you see...

Anapanasati, Samatha, and Vipassana, from: insight requires access concentration?

From https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=32203 Hello: "Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. The four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors. And the seven awa...

Hello:

It wouldn´t work, and pretty much every post would have to be subject to deep analysis and interpretation.

Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

Thanks all for your insights thus far. So am I capturing the spirit of the majority opinion here by saying that the difference between vipassana and samatha versions of anapanasati would be in the "willingness" to be distracted? So for instance, when I'm trying to concentrate I will often get rumbl...

Re: Losing friendships

Hello:

Closest friends will stick around, but you probably won´t see them so often as you used to do.
But you have to show them affection from time to time, so they can know you still care.

Re: MN 43: What is meaning by "his faculties are exceptionally clear"?

Dear forum MN 43 is translated as follows: Friend, there are these five faculties each with a separate range, a separate domain, and they do not experience one another’s range & domain: the eye-faculty, the ear-faculty, the nose-faculty, the tongue-faculty, & the body-faculty. What is the differenc...

Re: Overcoming Fear of Death

Hello:

By living a good life you give up most of the fear of death (if you believe in heaven/hell/rebirth).
If that is not enough work on your understanding and personal views about what happens at the time of death.

Re: Is it okay to read buddhist text while i am using the toilet, having a smoke?

Ive been reminded by a few Mahayana layfolk to treat the dhamma with respect and as such only leave Buddhist text in clean places. Such as, no putting any Buddhist book behind the toilet etc. I do not know whether they are just expressing their opinion or it is a real rule in Mahayana Buddhism. Doe...

Re: Can everyone share their views on dependent origination ?

Each one explain in their own way so that one can learn from each other, what do you think ? Hello: The way i would explain it is that due to ignorance we get involved with a proces...

No, it would be a racialist argument, but not racist. Racism is about domination/power. Saying that Westerners can do Buddhism (an Asian philosophical/religious system) better than Asians sounds racist , especially when one considers the effects of Western colonialism in the Asian region. Hello Gri...

Well, I think it's far from true. There is "folk" and "essential" Buddhism in both Asia and in the West, and I think that it's easy to mix up the two:
