Re: The Dhamma and Science

How do we approach Suttas which go against current scientific knowledge? For example, modern science tells us that a Big Crunch and a cyclic universe is impossible due to the increasing rate of expansion of the universe. The only two options are the Big Rip or the Big Freeze. This contradicts the s...

Re: Liking and disliking people

Hello:

Emm no, you can like some people more than others.
But you should avoid cravings: lust or aversion towards friends/enemies.
The friend[56] has passed away,
The Master, too, has gone.
There is no friendship now that equals this:
The mindfulness directed bodywards.
Regards.

Re: How do you interpret this Sutta?

Isn't he then lying, since that isn't how the world works? If it were a simile doesn't he usually state so? The fact of the matter is that when humans screw up the environment, there'll be a lot more droughts in certain areas, more tornadoes and storms in others, etc. but is it also due to the wrat...

Re: Ambivalence

Hello Lostitude: Imagine you take some savings, buy a gift, go to an hospital, and give the present to some terminal cancer pacient. You probably (like most people), would feel a lot of happiness, excitement and fun. Why?, because you know you did something good and the receiver became happy. Yes, y...

Re: Ambivalence

Hello, How does buddhism deal with ambivalence? For example, having accepted that life has nothing to offer in terms of pure happiness, than even times of pleasure in this world are tainted with suffering - yet caving in to all sorts of desires and pleasures in daily life. Or, knowing that meditato...

Re: Are the gods and deities mentioned in Sutta are just the mythology?

Hello: But what is so strange about gods that is hard to believe in them?. Lifespan? ----- For a fly who lives 24 hrs, thinking a being can live 100 years would seem impossible. Radiance? ---- The Glofish is a kind of fish that is fluorescent. The electric eel can generate electric fields. Not being...

Re: How should one be mindful of arising of defilements?

Hello: They are all fine,we just have to keep in mind that we observe in order to let go. (Like a sniper looking at the crosshair of his gun, he doesn´t become obsessed with the crosshair, he just observes the crosshair in order to shoot the bullet in the right direction :sage: :sage: :sage: ), that...

Re: Nature of the Buddha’s omniscience

As I continue to welcome this Practice into my life, I experience great doubt with respect to certain sectarian accounts of the Buddha. For example: the rather angelic experience of his coming into the world. Are there any sources to explain this moment from a more secular perspective? More importa...

Re: How to deal with humiliation?

Hello: Something that its hard to swallow, is that bullies are attracted to people who display weakness, and that weakness many times its because they are not living in harmony or in line with the dhamma (or because of a past life kamma). I give you an example: If you see any hollywood teenage movie...

Intermittent fasting now its cool

Hello: Looking from the outside, i watched for years how the fitness world praised frequent eating, stating that 5-8 meals a day was the most healthy thing a person could do, even for weight loss. Even the typical 3 meals a day diet was underappreciated. Eating one meal a day was plainly unhealthy a...

Re: Your successes in overcoming obstacles and hindrances to meditation

Hello: Emm for me the basic was to learn that mind and body are connected, and that listening to the body was a lot easier. Calming the body fabrication, learning what things make the body tight, and what things not. Then you just begin to cut things that make the body upset: Not resting when you ne...

Re: Schizophrenia and mystical experience

Hello: Schizophrenics have a tendency to follow esoteric doctrines. Depressive people have a tendency to seclusion. Anorexics have a tendency to eat one meal a day. Pedophilics have a tendency to conceil their sexuality by celibacy. Your observation is very interesting. Other than the last one, the...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Hello Lal:

I like the "moral meditation" approach.
Question:

-In some suttas it seems people gain stream entry without hearing a discourse on “anicca, dukkha and anatta”, but on other topics.
What is your explanation for that?.

Regards.
