Re: How do you/did you tell unsupportive parents?

Some shared experiences from Youtube on the topic...some with less supportive parents, some with more. Ven. Uttamo (4) - Parents' Opposition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATPIr0zL_1k Ven. Uttamo (6) - Ordination and the parents http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ebbWwpTG8&feature=related Ven. Kum...

Re: Biija niyama, Kamma, DNA, and when does life begin?

I am not saying that you shouldn't care. Merely pointing out that as the Buddha put it, if you have an arrow sticking into your ribs, rather than speculating about the nature the wood and the type of bird the feathers came from and the motivation of the archer it might be a good idea to get the arr...

The answer to this question impacts on how Buddhists view abortion.

Re: Biija niyama, Kamma, DNA, and when does life begin?

Having given this an inordinate amount of thought, I'm inclined to put my bet firmly on 'at conception' in line with the orthodox Theravada viewpoint. It may be precisely the instability of consciousness (that is, of ordinary people who still crave sensuality) existing without contact with the sensu...

Re: Biija niyama, Kamma, DNA, and when does life begin?

I've heard two different versions of when life begins, i.e., the stream of consciousness entering the womb, from Buddhist teachers. I get off the train at the bolded portion. I hate the expression, too. I've been looking for the appropriate Pali expression and a less painful English expression but ...

Re: Cure for Possesion?

I thought the idea was that there are non-human entities who prefer to subsist on raw flesh, and if you happened to be possessed by one and therefore unable to control one's actions, it is not an offense to eat foods otherwise forbidden in the vinaya. :rolleye: Even though the affliction subsided af...

Re: Can a Buddhist drink alcohol in moderation?

If you're after a simple answer: no. The fifth precept clearly prohibits alcohol in any quantity for those who uphold it, except when it is consumed unknowingly or as an essential ingredient in medicines. But then again, if you were into black and white legalistic prohibitions without explanation, J...

Re: Bad resources

While not a dhamma book, I didn't enjoy Children Who Have Lived Before, by Trutz Hardo. It was pure recycled Stevenson...but the absolute worst of Stevenson, not even the tolerable aspects of his 'research'...in poor English and I have to hide it whenever I have friends come round because I'd rather...

Re: Ven. Dr. Mettanando disrobes

I am truly saddened to hear this. Dr. Mano Laohavanich was nearly solely responsible for maintaining my faith in the Thai monastic sangha. His discerning and well-educated writings were always of a quality I was proud to show to curious non-Buddhists with medical and philosophical backgrounds. His v...

Beautiful! Thankyou Viscid, that's really inspired me.

Afterall, it doesn't really do to practice in 'The Forest Tradition' *cough* *cough* *cough*, like I do, without ever having actually meditated in a forest. :embarassed: :embarassed: :embarassed:

Re: Dorm Room?

I once saw a guy sitting down meditating in the middle of an over-crowded footpath in the Sydney CBD. However, if that's not your style... At night in the dark after everyone's gone to sleep sitting on your bed is good, too. (or in the early morning) You might want to invest in some earplugs if the ...
