Re: Emotions when reading fiction...

Of course you're "allowed " to have feelings. This is something that bothers me with many dhamma followers, esp in the Theravada. This kind of stoic, feelings-are-bad attitude you often get. It's wrong understanding. it's about developing a relationship with your feelings in a healthy way....

Re: Shooter at DC shipyard was Buddhist

many many people have their head in the sand when it comes to the kind of people who are attracted to Buddhism. The comments on that article denouncing it as offensive and trashy are pretty predictable. People don't just become "Buddhist" and then everything is peace and love. They are sti...

Re: Thoughts on weightlifting

Weightlifting is good for your body. This fact is so obvious it should not have to be mentioned, and yet, once again I hear the same old stuff. Reminds me of the guy I saw yesterday--an older gentleman, who observed my morning Yoga. I got the universal reply: "I'm too stiff to do that". W...

Re: Meditation Challenge on the Radio

I heard RN this morning and several people who took up the challenge reported on their experience and a teacher (who i've not heard of) gave advice. The repeat is on tonight, or online. it was interesting. I just wonder why photos of people meditating always look the way they do. I've never seen any...

Meditation Challenge on the Radio

Radio National (in Australia) has a daily life issues program called Life Matters. Life Matters has launched a 6 week Meditation Challenge. Obviously it's going to be shying away from any "religious" aspects & I think that's to be expected. anyway Buddhists don't own meditation and a b...

Re: Thoughts on weightlifting

I do weight lifting. I do it in the gym and I go to one of those pump classes once or twice a week that has a "feel the burn" instructor and Eurovison type music. I find it fun. Weight training is good for you. You won't "bulk up" unless want to & I think that's quite hard to...

Re: Dhamma and psychotherapy

Buddhism and psychotherapy are not mutually exclusive at all. The Buddha was a psychotherapist it's true... In fact there is an annual conference here in Sydney on Buddhism and psychotherapy and an Association, too http://www.buddhismandpsychotherapy.org/about" onclick="window.open(this.hr...

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

What I have gotten out of the 5th precept is not just grog or drugs but all intoxicants that can cloud the mind. excess TV that dulls our minds, porn... you know. all that stuff. What was interesting to me is in a talk I heard just a couple of days ago the teacher was saying that in his experience w...

Re: Facebook induced suffering

I don't use it much but I have joined the Dhammawheel group. I'm reluctant to live my life on the internet, I like some privacy. I don't feel the tempation to check facebook constantly but I can see how easily it could happen to some. The internet in general can really get the sankharas going

Re: What's the benefit of walking meditation?

On a long private retreat recently, I found walking meditation to be far more beneficial FOR ME (not necessarily for YOU) than any sitting I did. I did a lot of walking and I recommend it it you particularly find you live "in your head" so much that sitting can get a bit "messy"....

Re: How Insistent Are You in Observing Your Fifth Precept?

I used to drink a lot. I had a beer two weeks ago & it tasted really awful. I still like it though I don't drink these days. I'm not insistent about it because otherwise it just makes me feel too earnest. I know my limits and weaknesses and i'd just rather be relaxed

I keep one. I have do so for a few years now. I put all kinds of things in there. Sometimes I use extracts from it to talk with my teacher about problems that come up. it's very useful.

Re: Switching off may be the key to finding true connection

very interesting. If only people would take note of this kind of thing. when you sit on the train and "do nothing" some people give suspicious looks. it's strange. I remember a time not that long ago when it wasn't like this. The other day I almost ran over a young lady plugged into her ip...
