Re: Ciao!

Grazie! Conosco Pian dei Ciliegi ma non sapevo che c’erano discorsi scaricabili. There is one monk at Santacittarama who is Italian by birth and has some Dhamma talks recorded (Mahapanno?) but I have had a hard time finding more. Regardless I will check out your suggestions. Ti ringrazio e ti auguro...

Re: Ciao!

Benvenuto! Sapresti, per caso, un sito in cui si possono trovare discorsi del Dhamma in italiano?

Re: don't give up on jhāna yet, until you drink from the sutta cup

Why not keep practicing with jhana as a provisional goal while armed with the perception that it is very possibly out of one's reach as a lay person at this point in the eon?

For whatever reason, I find NDEs helpful in strengthening my faith in the reality of kamma. Here’s a video that may be of use if you haven’t completely abandoned YouTube: https://youtu.be/U_AI2UMABJ0

I have pondered this question for a while and an still unsure exactly what I think about it. Regardless, I don’t think any of the NDE experiences you mentioned preclude rebirth in the apaya lokā. In fact, there are several accounts of negative NDEs that start off benignly but proceed to get progress...

Re: Crowd Funding to Preserve Bhante Dhammika's 40 years of work

All conditioned phenomena are impermanent. The internet just happens to be more impermanent than marble slabs.

I'm always excited by the opportunity to offer Dhamma dana however. Let's hope the Venerable Dhammika's sites don't go the way of the Venerable Samahita's.

Mettacittena,

Mike

Re: Is the Jain stance on nonviolence more compelling then the Buddhist viewpoint?

This quote comes under Pācittiya 74 on giving a bhikkhu a blow out of anger. Non-offences. According to the Vibhaṅga, there is no offence for a bhikkhu who, trapped in a difficult situation, gives a blow “desiring freedom.” The Commentary’s discussion of this point shows that it includes what we at...

Re: Is the Jain stance on nonviolence more compelling then the Buddhist viewpoint?

Buddhism is pragmatic. If a bhikkhu is being held against his will or threatened with death or injury he is allowed to give his assailant a blow in order to escape. That would likely be a strong blow, and might (perhaps) result in the death of his assailant, but if there is no intention to kill, th...

Re: Is the Jain stance on nonviolence more compelling then the Buddhist viewpoint?

Ahimsa is the central tenet of Jainism, all its other epistemology is derived from it. That's certainly a Western misrepresentation. Jainism has a metaphyiscal doctrine that is most certainly not derived from ahimsa, and it is explicated in 54 verses in the text Ishtopedesha with zero mention or re...

Hi all,

I practice using Wat Metta's calendar as there as a number of ways to calculate the days. Today is an uposatha and I'm observing. Wishing all beings the chance to meet with the Dhamma and to practice it. Mettacittena!

Re: Questions on Asura (Demon) Plane of existence

Finally, what would be the point of possessing human beings? I understand we have to work out our karma but why would the law of karma allow us as demons to do evil to others? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of working out our karma? There's no defeating the purpose of Kamma because no being, demo...

I believe it. And, the world was once filled with arahants. It's up to me to practice with the mind, body and kamma vipaka to which I am heir. :anjali:
